As far as I know, it's the other way around - each version of the Zune software only picks up its corresponding firmware updates (3.0 => 3.0, 3.1 => 3.1, 4.0 => 3.2, 4.2 => 3.3, etc.). If 4.2 won't let you update, downgrading won't do much good.
