@Putis so we've been saying the same thing all along. It might be a combination, but it's definitely not all caused by them? Woot.

@Red That's exactly the point that radio host Michael Savage has made about ADD/ADHD. He thinks it's a big conspiracy by the drug companies to sell sedatives to parents who give them to their children.

Ya, it's getting pretty bad. Autism does tend to be much more life-interfering than ADD/HD, which is why I think we should focus more on helping autistic people, instead of searching pointlessly for some gene causing it.

Sadly this is happening in the world of autism as well. For with all the conviction that there is a genetic cause, a market is created for a wonder drug to fix autistic kids.

putis, I think you and I have found a common ground... when I say that it's caused by genetics, I am in the same position as J, but also think that environment factors into it.

I have no proof, but you can't simply say no, as you do not know. Also, both J and myself were taught that it IS genetic, regardless of whether or not that's true, we live no where near each other, so there has to be some sort of evidence that it's genetic. Red Sky, Red Sky, shame on you and on you Putis. Autism is not solely caused by either genetics or environmental factors. It is a combination of genetic predisposition and unspecific environmental factors, that may act in a certain way and cause certain degrees of autism. It is different per person. Red Sky, I am certain that your Biology teacher was reffering to the genetic predisposition to autism, not that it's cause was genetic. I am slightly autisitic, and have thus asked doctors, and researched the topic to some extent.

@ADD/ADHD, too me, I think it's somewhat of a problem, but I think it's typical modern life.
TV, VG, things have to be interesting.
@Everyone else, I wanted you guys to read the article for a reason.
@Putis, You're born with it. I know autism is thrown around a lot. That's why I referenced the article.
Again, I would like you guys to read the article.
I have a two friends with Autism and 1 with Aspegers.

That's the problem. You're asking doctors. They don't know the cause, and more importantly, have no idea how to help, why would you listen to them?

Go talk to a behavior analyst.

Autism isn't 'caused,' as I said. It's not just one thing that just 'gets you all of a sudden.' It develops, due to ones behavioral environment. The environmental factors are not 'unspecific.' Obviously, (neuro)biological factors come into play, but it's because of behavioral contingencies that it develops. That's the problem with using the word 'environment.' When it's used regarding autism, it usually means pollutants, toxins, etc., of some kind in the actual environment. I don't mean that at all. Just another example of how incorrectly labeling things can make matters worse.

By environment, I have been referring to "the entire constellation of circumstances in which an organism exists. This includes events both inside and outside of an organism, but only real physical events are included." Reinforcement and/or punishment contingencies, that shape and reinforce what are considered to be 'autistic,' behaviors.

That is why behavior analysis is the only thing that has been as widely successful at helping 'autistic' kids live more normal lives.

No, you're not. I did read the article, and it's sad that people still cling to that silly old notion that it all has to do with genes, and once we find those genes, everything will be better.

You should read a few of the articles I posted.

If either of you seriously want to help yourself or your friends with autism, then take a good look into behavior therapy/analysis. I know first hand that it's usually very successful, and the people working in the field all want to help.

Thanks. I don't recall seeing those articles. Apparently, the majority of the time Autism is diagnosed, it is in babyhood.(First year of life)

Just trying to spread the knowledge. I had most of them in a couple earlier posts, and added one or two.

One of the reasons for that is as a child gets older, the fact that it doesn't act like other children becomes more and more obvious.

I love it when other people say things better than me. But, I agree with you so far Putis.

Not me, but behaviorism. The problem is that so few people have embraced it, when it is really quite powerful.
