"universe"? A look at the actual word.

Guys, universe, we use the word all the time, but what are we saying?

I believe it's everything summed up in what the word refers to.

Uni - as in one of something, or being of only one nature.

Verse - A bible verse.

Genesis (1st book in the Bible) 1:1 - The Uni-VERSE! The word refers to the verse, which refers to what we generally consider the universe (everything).

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Isn't that what universe is, the stars & planets & everythign we see when we look up & the earth around us?

Just a thought..what do you think?

I thought you'd go somewhere with there only being 1 universe and not all these parallel ones.

no one knows what the universe is and how many there are........theres something called string theory, its very out there and abstract and claims that theirs something like 11 universes and dimensions.......thers a movie on it called elegant universe

Well, it's an interesting idea. It is possible tha tthe word "universe" derives from people simply referring to gen 1:1. I don't know if it's the true derivation or not, and I don't think I'll ever know.

Well, just for the record, you can't use the word that your trying to describe in the description, if you do, you explained nothing. I just thought I'd throw that in.
To start off, Uni, does not mean "as in one of something", it just means one.
And once again, you did not explain verse, Verse by terms of websters dictionary means "a poem, or piece of poetry.", so it means one poem pretty much, I'm not going to put in any philosophical meanings of it.

Just thought I'd share.

Funny you mention that, although they didn't have websters dictionary, poetry was around much longer than the bible was, hence the the fact that parts of poems are called Verses.

Yes, this is an original writing, I didn't get the idea from anybody or any piece of literature. I read the word in another post and this just, sort of, epiphanized in my head.
That's not to say I'm the first to think of it this way. There's 8 billion people in the world (or something like that) I'm sure somebody else out there thinks in accord.

Yes, I know it's flawed. I'm only a Junior in high-school, I did a little red-herring, but I meant it to restate and drive home my point, but I'm glad some have taken to critiquing it.

PS.Did anybody else notice Romney's out of the republican race? Go Huckabee! lolz

PSS. Yes, I know epiphanized isn't a word, but I like it. Start using it, I'm sure we'll see it in Webster's in 10 years.

If I may, the word universe comes from the Latin word unversum. which translates into "everything rolled into one thing" or "Every thing rotating together."

It was a good thought though, Striker.

A cool thought about the universe: If it is endless and infinite, that means anything that could possibly happen has/will happen. It's like Schroedinger's Cat. Or whatever that theory is.

the universe is whatever the mind thinks it is. I, personally, don't believe the universe has much of anything to do with God, but i think the universe encompasses the world and goes on for as far as the extent of our knowledge. To know more about the universe, we need to extend our knowledge to the point where the universe and what is "in it" makes sense.

And imo, i feel like i just spewed out a bunch of bull$hit haha. Im in 10th grade btw, so i want a cookie :p
