I guess this would go under hacks I'm not sure
but this is pretty self exlpanatory i would like to see if anyone could get the zune software (plus syncing etc.) working on a linux machine
before you ask i have tried it on wine the closest i have gotten was using Lucifer's portable zune software but it gave me a dll error
I Know about the virtual machine workaround but i don't have that kind of space (net book around 2gb of hard drive space {gonna ad an external hard drive})
libMTP (the POSIX compliant implementation of MTP) has not been able to implement this, yet. And the Rockbox team have not been able to get around the digitally signed MS firmware, either.
The Zune doesn't actually use MTP, it uses a proprietary protocol called MTPZ. As such, it's very unlikely that this will ever work in a non-MS OS.

Although it uses MTPZ, there is hardly anything proprietary about it. MTPZ is just MTP plus the requirement of authentication before any MTP commands can work.
The Rockbox team is out of luck. The Zune's firmware can not be changed with the exception of possibly hardware modification.

Right, but MTPZ uses MTP with the only difference being the authentication. Thus, most of MTPZ is not proprietary, since most of it is just MTP commands. So it is still proprietary, but only because of the authentication.
