Yeah, you wouldn't be the first to try. And it didn't work for them either. For the Zune hardware to allow access, it needs to be a digital signature match. Also, the handshake has nothing to do with alternate firmware, only syncing and wireless. Unless you run approved firmware that matches the digital signatures on the validation chip on the circuit board, which is protected by another set of digital signatures, the Zune will not work. If anything, target the chip, not the hard drive.
