I have one of the 30gb Zune and was looking at some of the videos that describe how to replace the HDD. All the videos, however, just showed people upgrading to either 60 or 80gb. Is it possible to get a 500gb 2.5" laptop hard drive and replace the current one? I've been looking all over to see if someone has done this and can't find anything. Are people not doing it because of compatibility issues or what?

I find this to be highly unlikely.

![]() It's possible but you'd need an adaptor as the Zune uses a Zif connection, unlike pretty much every harddrive under the sun. Then you'd have to put the Zune in a new case as that harddrive would nowhere hear fit.

So in all reality as Nurta said it wouldnt be a Zune after that, just a fancy case and big HDD, with a Zune interface.

not possible with a regular 2.5" hard drive buddy :P only fits 1.8" .zif hard drives which max is around 300gb or so which is not even out yet i believe not even the giant brick old zune 30 can fit the 2.5 " unless you make it a super fragile case it might..

I don't necessarily need 500GB...just wanted to know if it was possible to take a 2.5 laptop HDD and slap it on a Zune even though it may be a bit "ghetto". Even with a ZIF/IDE/SATA converter this is not possible? I do have 120gb of music and around 100gb of video content so I don't think the concept of a 500gb media player is THAT far fetched. Well, thanks anyways guys...though a bit condescending you have been slightly helpful.

there is a 240gb 1.8", I don't think that it comes out till later this year but that would fit I do believe.

I just find this funny as hell.
It's possible but it'll drain your battery super fast, be bigger than a graphing calculator, and ugly as an iPod. Plus, it'd be a ton of work

it's probable, not practical and not really worth it. Many have tried to switch out their zune HDD's and many have failed. take example that some idiots tried to replace a 30gb HDD with a 120gb HDD and failed with now 2 broken zunes and some parts left over. If you have the time/money/will/more money, go ahead and enlighten us. Until then i hope you keep your zune the way it is.
P.S. if you really really want to do this, get an external HDD and slap on the zune and find a way to have the zune connected through the usb sync cable or through wifi. That's your best bet. ![]() |
