RIG isn't THAT big of a deal. It just makes deployment easier for nooblets.

Agreed. most people SHOULD have c# and XNA, and if they don't, then they wouldn't be able to modify their games before they install them. for example, I was dissapointed with the release of Netrix's text reader. I don't like the background, and I like to make my own to customize the zune game/app to my liking. I'll admit it was a big thing for me seeing it'snotabigtruck's release of RIG, but then I quickly discovered that it means ZERO customization. And cold fusion likes his customization >>

It's not even that much easier. it's still point and click.

Most people do not need to modify their games before installing them. The source (at least for my games/apps) is available to anyone. All they have to do is ask for it.

RIG lets game devs make installers that work independently of XNA or C#. With a RIG installer you can just click through the deployment process.

I'm not sure about RIG being a "breakthrough in Zune gaming", but it does a lot more than making "deployment easier for nooblets". Also, the user content features of the RIG version in the Book Reader (which was custom modified by Netrix) are a lot less of a chore to use than setting the properties of text files one by one in VS.

If you can get a .xnb version of your background, you could extract the package with 7-zip, replace the background, and run rigdp.exe. Also, like Netrix already said, you can ask him for the source.

RIG isn't mutually exclusive with releasing the source - SIR TET is licensed under the GPL and both source and RIG versions are available. The thing is that when both source and the installer are presented up front, users will often take the source simply because it's what they're used to, without regard to the potential benefits of each option. This leads to an increased support burden, as many users fail to figure out how to utilize XNA Game Studio for deployment.

There is also the fact that this allows people that have 64-bit Windows to deploy games to their Zune. I find it very convenient to be able to deploy RIG games on my Vista Ultimate 64-bit without having to start up a virtual machine that has XP 32-bit on it and deploy through that.

Another thing is that people can install Visual C# and XNA, deploy a game to their Zune, then uninstall them to save a good amount of hard drive space.
