I really think that's more of a hardware thing. I'm not sure it would be worth cracking open your zune just to change the tuner to AM, and I'm guessing the firmware would need to be changed to utilize it. Which hasn't been accomplished yet.

It's definitely a hardware thing. I mean, for AM radio, you'd have to enable the Zune to pick up different frequencies. I doubt any software hack could do that.

am would be almost impossible with a hd involved. Am radio picks up anything electrical/electromagnetic/motor type and it will cause a hiss in the sound. If you don't believe me, hold up a portable am radio walkman next to a monitor, hd while it's running..can you imagine a hardware am tuner inside trying to bypass the hd sound? It might be possible on the flash versions, but I don't think it's in high demand, although everyone I know who listens to talk radio wishes it so..

Maybe someone could make this into an app

It just doesn't seem possible without changing the hardware.

dont think it can work because the antenna has to be built to pick up the AM signal. Maybe if you were to open the Zune up and put a new antenna it might allow a hack to be possible.

i think AM antennas need more power.. plus... who cares about AM? nowadays even sports stations are switching to FM

Most of you probably don't know that the zune's hardware is AM radio capable. It's also touchscreen, mic, HD external display,. etc capable. But there's 2 limiting factors why zune doesn't have AM radio

1) AM radio needs a loop antenna which is about 3 times bigger than the zune itself
2) MS doens't want to unlock all the features.
3) MS doens't want to write what's more than needed in the firmware.

theoretically, it may be possible, am and fm just run different frequency ranges, and to get to a frequency you need an antenna that is preferably a dividend of the wavelength, i would need to check on wavelengths and frequencies for fm and am, given that the application feature is even equiped to handle radio input, a good software based noise reducer should tune out the hard drive, hmmm, i think its possible, but more work than makes it practical.

It's probably possible to mod the hardware of the Zune (adding a different antenna to pickup different frequencies), and I would do it, but I don't feel like voiding my warranty at the moment.

No.

1) Need Firmware Hack, games don't have enough access
2) Need hardware hack, the Zune doesn't have a AM antenna
3) You'd have to replace the FM Tuner
4) You'd have a giant antenna sticking out of the back of your Zune

@Jack to say it's so and so capable is true to some extent no matter what you say. At some level the Zune is nuclear bomb capable if you add a nuclear bomb to it. To say it's Touch Screen Capable is misleading. You make it sound like all you'd need to do is replace the screen with a touch screen and you'd be all set, when really the capability you're talking about is that none of the chips are incompatible. The firmware change would be immense and there would also need to be immense hardware change. If it were as easy as you make it sound, it'd have been done already
