Linux is already know to be capable of running on a Zune's processor. If someone could just find a way to get [b]TOTAL[b] access to Zune's firmware and be able to decode it to be edited or removed for Linux, a Linux-based firmware, or a completely ****ing custom firmware. This would be amazing because Microsoft does a bad job at using any of their device's potential. Thats why Apple is dominating the portable music device market, they milk those little pods for everything they can **** out.

There have been many requests for this, the Zune has a signature that will not allow firmware even 1 bit different to run on the device.
On another note, watch that language.

If we had access to the flash ROM chip to remove the OS completely it could work but currently we have no way to access it from a software point of view and i don't think any one has of yet taken the zune "completely" apart to try it

Even if you could access the ROM chip, a different firmware would not run.

It would allow you to develop a new firmware and OS for it. having access to the ROM chip would allow us to removed the current OS and thus the security along with it allowing linux to be places on the zune hardware. the only draw back would be having to write a firmware completely from scratch
