Marriage pre-dates Christ, and thus Christianity. And, interestingly enough, there is evidence of same-sex marriages in ancient times, and not just in Europe.
It was eventually banned in Europe by, you guessed it, a Christian emperor.
As for why a gay couple would want to get "married" (join in a union) - I don't think it's very different from the reasons why modern opposite-sex couples want to get married. There's even the possibility of chidren, be it in vitro or adoption.
