I think that at the time we're in, we don't need religion, but others need it to be happy, so they can have it.
Some people will tell you that the only reason religion is around is because some tribal leader in the stone age needed a reason to claim that he's the right one for the throne. He also needed a way to tell his subjects how to act, so he made rules, and punishments for these rules. Tribal leaders would tell their people that they will be punished for not following the orders of an "all mighty God." The leader would tell them that a God would punish them, because the towns people would simply rise up against the leader. The leader simply needed a fail safe. This idea of a god would scare people, so the towns people would spread the word of an all mighty god and a chain reaction started. people started to worship this "god" or "gods" because they didn't know better. Then churches started. People who wanted to help spread the word would have gatherings, thinking that God would help them through life. The churches got bigger as well as the King's power So now There is religion. Aswell as government. Both are based on the same pricipals, but are still somewhat separated. Later on, after both church and state are powerfull, they start to become tangled up... with a government that could kill you for doing something bad, there wasn't much of a reason for religion. The church saw this, and would make more reasons for people to come to church. You may think, why would they want people to come to church if they didn't need it, because the people running the church thought that is was their duty to spread the word of God. The church and state are now tangled up because the church gives the king lots of money to get his people to come to church, also the king probably goes to church aswell. Now that the church is dependant on the king for followers, and the king is dependant on the church for money. There are many different types religion all over the world. Slowly the King is less dependant on the church and the church needs the king even less. This is because of merchantilism. However, religion is so wide spread and everyone grows up knowing that there is a god and that's the way it is. So, now everyone in a modern area of the globe lives their lives acording to the rules set by religion. And then some revolutions happen and the government is changed completely. Even though everyone still lives their life the same way, they just have a different leader. And here we are in America, with a "separate church and state" even though every major law is based on greko-roman religion. But the only reason chuch is separate from state is because there are too many types of religion. People got soo caught up in the unimportant details to their religion to see that all realigion is basically the same. So we live in a country that is governed by religion, but Church and sate are separate. That was like a mix between ranting and practicing for an essay in my history class. Sorry for any gramatical mistakes, or spelling.

I disagree completely. Religion is a system of beliefs one follows, not some thing people can have just so they can be happy.
If we go by your beliefs, with the way Bush is making this country totalinarian, we NEED religion to be happy. There. In my view and yours.

No, we live in a country where are laws are based on our culture and ancestry, which is predominantly Christian. There's a difference. The difference being, over time, our society and laws will diverge from religious principles as more people enter this country of varying religions and become huge portions of this country. Atheism is the fastest growing religion in America. With time, it's natural that we will digress from religion, though it can still remain a part of life. I welcome that time. And I say this as someone who was raised Catholic, but whose beliefs fall in line with Deism. Which, coincidentally, was the religion many of our Founding Fathers believed in. That's an excellent point when someone says that this country was founded as a "Christian nation." I believe in science, logic, and reason. As long as our laws comply to those standards, I'm happy. And, no, religion and government are not founded on the same principles. Religion provides explanations, comfort, and restricts evil acts, for most people anyway. Government is based solely on protecting the people, it doesn't provide answers to life's big questions or anything like that. Oh, and, mixing up tenses isn't as bad as using 2nd person in the type of essay I assume you are writing. However, you do get points for somewhat resembling Nietzsche in one part of your essay.

Many of the ideas for American governement
Are based back to religion Your post was well written Maybe Church and State are different in America, so then when The President does something against Catholic Church beliefs, Catholics of the country are not excommunitcated~ I dunno

I consider myself a red letter christian meaning I only believe in Christ's words.
When he said, Quote:
Protestants believe by on this Rock it means on his people. I believe it means on his people, that should not be called Christians because that means "miniature Christ" and all Christians have sinned so we should be called followers of Christ like the disciples. Anyway what I am trying to say is that some Religion was made government like through tradition that should not apply to their title.

i mean, you mention a lot of good things, but what about the Bible? how did those Kings who were trying to get everyone to follow them write the entire Bible and make it seem like it was passed down?
