Okay,
Here's another way to use your Zune as an external HDD. Although not as cool as the registry hack, this one's easier and safer for the common people. Software required: Zune Software, .NET Framework 2.0, and a special "codec". The idea: embed the file you want to transfer to a JPEG EXIF, then sync it with your Zune using Zune Software. Beam it to friends. Friends synced up Zune with their computers, then run the "decoder" tool to extract the JPEG EXIF property back to a file. Voila! Anyone interested? I have a running prototype, and would love to collab with someone with good UI coder (.NET only). I can e-mail for a sample of the "encoded" JPEG. |

By a running prototype, do you mean that you actually have this working? If so, I am very fluent in VB.net/8, and I know Visual C#, so I can help if needed.

Pierce28: yes, it runs. I'll contact you l8r for details.
Robb4248: I presume someone already did this trick but somehow no program has emerged using this technique. Update on the idea: it seems .NET cannot write anymore than 64K of EXIF data, so currently I embed the file after the image and it works well. I have a Virtual PC 2007 on a JPG image on a Zune. |

Cool. Just send me a PM when you're ready.
So does this hack have a file size limit? If not, if we can make an easy to use program that allows this to be easily packaged and unpackaged, this could be big. Now Rob, what do you mean this has already been done?

Instead of encrypting the jpg, you encrypt the internal archive.

I've passed the 30Mb limit on the VPC2K7 installer.
I've also published the executable in my blog: http://geeks.netindonesia.net/blogs/...th-a-Zune.aspx Your feedback, please. |

Great then, you can take a look at my implementation and give info over what can be improved.
Anyway, about encryption, I'm not encrypting anything here. And if you're encrypting the archive/file, what would Zune display? |

Yes, we made a batch file, and some other member (afraid I forget who) made ICHWM, a very nice drag and drop gui program to do the same thing.

No, for one this is hardly a hack, it is merely a trick to send the images. This hack has multiple ways to operate and this program is just one of them, you can simply rename the extension .jpg and throw it in a folder and it works just as well. Honestly, at this point, you can simply upload the file to sendspace if you want to transfer it. The reason sharing songs is useful is that the Zune can play the songs, the Zune can't play the files using this method, so why not just use sendspace or something?

Nurta: I've found myself in several situations where it is easier to send the file over Zune's wifi, or by plugging my Zune into another PC (either offline, or just for convenience). It's a nifty little utility, if nothing more for the cool factor.

Nurta: Well, for people who doesn't have broadband connectivity, sharing files as big as 10Mb over the net can be a big problem. With a Zune, you needn't a desktop/laptop computer to be able to receive files from your friends.
