ZB will be abuze with this info if he ever tells us. I would really like to put png or gif on my zune because I hate the compression bugs on jpg images, especially if it resizes them for you. Please tell!

I'd like to see a .TIF put on there, and then exploit it.

Cool. If you aren't ready to post instructions, please post the image files you tested with.

> My Zune now supports .bmp, .png, and .gif images!
FWIW: I have BMPs and PNGs working on my Zune. No luck with GIFs (at least those I tested) or TIFs.

My approach: You need an MTP transfer program that will transfer the .BMP files to the Zune device, but mark them as JPEG (EXIF) format. You can even leave the filename with a ".BMP" extension. They draw fine, scaled if necessary to fill the screen.
The "ZUNE.EXE" program won't do this as we know. Dumber upload programs might be trickable by renaming the file to .JPG.

If you can't find one of those, you can write your own. The MTP transfer protocol is well documented and there are source code samples on the Microsoft website.
You need the trick of ctrl-alt-delete killing ZUNE.EXE during sync (so called "unlocking") for any of these approaches.
----
Historical note: The version 2.0 firmware had "MTP" entries for BMP, PNG and GIF. They were removed in more recent releases.

NOTE: the background image is handled differently. The firmware converts the image to a properly sized .BMP and saves it to the system partition. That's why the background remains after you wipe the data partition of the hard drive (where images and music is stored).

There are probably other ways of doing this.
This does not change the firmware, but is unlocking features that are already in the Zune device (similar to the 'hard drive hack' or the 'asian font hack').

I am hoping this either leads to a tiff exploit or animated gif bg's

if he could get .tiff files to work it would make it easier to find a firmware exploit
