My Zune 30, last time I looked, has some MP4 files on it (movies) and of those MP4 files, there are no wmv counterparts for the MP4 videos that are on the zune and yet it plays them when I access them from the video menu. the 1.x firmware didn't have software mp4 codecs in the zune and thus... the zune 30 could not play them, now with the zune 30's version of the 2.x firmware, it supports MP4 videos via software codec support. THAT is why the zunes have 533Mhz CPUs .. the zune 80 has a built in MP4 decoder, but the 30 can play mp4s too, very limited on which files it supports, and if the MP4 isn't directly supported by the zune firmware / hardware, the zune software converts it to WMV. I think it has nothing to do with flawed or hacked files on zune, because by the time they hit the sync software - the sync software ignores files it isn't sure about... I've watched the sync software ignore 10s - 100s of files I've sent to the cue.

Oh dear god the zune does not have an AVI codec that is all so it doesn't know what the data within an AVI file is meant to do it only has a WMV codec

Yea, I've been following through this the last ew days and laugh every time someone says its a hardware problem. Its a mini computer, without the right programming, it can't do anything.

I don't understand why Zune doesn't support Divx. I want my Divx and Xvid support!

if the software supports it, it still won't make the zune support it because in order to do that we'd have to hack the firmware. if we can get the software to support it, then all that would do would be to allow us to drag movies to the software, but then the software would have to convert it to the zune's native wmv. until the day comes where we can hack the firmware, zune will not natively support Divx or Xvid.

That's exactly right MikeM. Does everyone think that the Zune is less sophisticated than a $34.00 DVD player from Wal-Mart? No, the DVD player manufactures worked out a deal with DivX and added the codecs. Now they can read those file types. I'm pretty sure that my Philips DVD player's processor sucks ass compared to the Zune. Just gotta crack that firmware cause I don't see Microsoft dishing out any dough to DivX anytime soon. That would be great, but not likely so get goin guys, crack that code

There is NO point in the zune firmware having an xvid (general fourCC codec compliant) costing MS anything except for paying the hours for their programmers to include it, seeing as Xvid is an opensource divx style mpeg4 codec that supports nearly all mpeg4 formats including divx, xvid, and MS Mpeg4... And with a simple GNU compliant license statement claiming that the zune uses this freeware codec as an added functionality and it was not developed by MS or meant to be sold by MS, they'd legally be able to use it... Since ALL Zune firmwares to date are running a variation of Windows CE V5.0 (as I recall) as the core OS behind the zune's interface, and CE has several methods for Xvid or Divx support in videos... I'd say its just a matter of whether or not MS themselves are willing to add such features in. My bet is that it will be a NO, after All, MS is interested in making money off of their zunes, and they earn most of the money via music and video sales, not unit sales.. so if they added a wider range of codec support (such as Xvid / divx) to the units, they decrease the selling power of videos for the zune, because Xvid and divx are the codecs of freedom.

Well, Xbox 360 has Divx/Xvid support. We can always dream that Microsoft will do the same for our precious Zunes.

I like the idea of the support, but imagine: $200 for a zune without a hard drive, $400 for a zune with a mediocre hard drive, and like $500+ for a zune with a bigger hard drive.
How about a 360 with flash memory (in the hard drive bay) instead of an actual hard drive... look into flash drives that replace hard drives... many laptops use them, lower power consumption, and some increased speed sometimes since you never have to wait for spin-up times or seek times.
I hope someone catches the relation I made between zune and 360.. my point in all that is that while different parts of MS work well together, they're not really the same company, They have many sub-companies or sections, each dedicated to their own stuff.

I think microsoft should have made the zune to be able to use all major video files. avi, mpeg, etc. etc.
