Default Gigabeat S Software

Can some one point me to where I can download the lastest version of this software for the S Series Devices. The Current Toshiba Room is for the F series. Or is this software the same. The Screenshots I have seen look to be very similar to the Zune. I am thinking looking at the firmwares and software it may be possibale to load the Gigabest to the zune.
Anyone with some suggestions please comment.

It might use the same software calls from its programming, but is it a WPD or USB?

Unfortunately there is not update to the firmware of the Gigabeat S. Toshiba and microsoft have abandoned all support for the gigabeat S because of the Zune. The reason for this is because the Zune is essentially a Gigabeat S w/ a modified skin, and slightly modified firmware. In order for Microsoft to market and take over the Zune, Toshiba had to abandon the Gigabeat S. That is why any type of custom firmware upgrade all depends on any Zune hacks, and vice versa.

That firmware updgrade is only for the F and X series of Gigabeat. I'm telling you there is no update for the Gigabeat S :-\. I own one too, so believe me I've looked every where for a firmware upgrade. The gigabeat S series has been abandoned by Toshiba, and replaced w/ Microsoft's Zune......

I'd be pissed if I had a gigabeat S. I think you guys need to get a petition going for an updated firmware to be released.

I was going to buy a gigabeat cuz it looked tons nicer and I could get a 60gb for the same price as this 30gb zune and didn't mind small quirks but I changed my mind. I don't think they even produce it anymore but you never know because a gigabeat s never existed. I understand little support but NO firmware updates AT ALL is really sad.

Some basic info:

Gigabeat S uses the Windows Mobile for Portable Media Centers, which the Zune also uses I think. I'm a Gigabeat user, not a Zunie.

Microsoft has abandoned WM for PMC. It's just over. The newer Gigabeats, the gumstick styles, use Embedded Windows, which I would expect the next Zune to use also. Microsoft has been pimping Embedded for a while, so this is somewhat inevitable. Not to mention Windows Mobile is way too hackable.

There is a good Rockbox effort to port it onto Gigabeat X and F models, but very little progress with the S models.

Me? I'm going to get a Zune cable and start in hacking it to fit the Gigabeat S connector. Rumor is that the shell is different, but the pins and pinouts are identical, so we'll see. I'll post here if it is, though you all won't really care much.

ps - I got my 60G S for $100 and some puter network work. I couldn't turn it down, and so far I love it. I thinkl the Zune control pad is too feh for me, but the 'X' rocks. If MY S blew up today, I might buy a Zune. But the S is so easy to get into, it reminds me of the days when I serviced microcassette recorders. I bought most every model cassette Walkman, and could fix every one - loose screws being the big problem. I still have a good selection of replacement ISO screws down to 0.6x0.8. It's my eyes that aren't so good any more...

No need to resurrect an old thread. (I had an "S" hated it. deleted itself over 10 times. Freaking zune prototype, you can't even set your own BG. IT SUX. But I did like the sounds.)

yes zune was developed closeley with toshiba from the beginning and it does use windows embedded mainly for hard wired functions and booting.

people try to put windows on psp...zune already runs it in a way?

Why is this ancient thread being reopened?

For more recent info on the GigaBeat-S please refer to this forum:
http://www.mygigabeat.com/forum/thre...10E008D1E4E473
(but the topics are ancient as well)

For updates, including the most recent GigaBeat-S update, unofficial software that will update/fix the firmware, and other hardware fixes, please look here:

-----
> Microsoft has abandoned WM for PMC. It's just over. The newer Gigabeats, the gumstick styles, use Embedded Windows...

BTW: This is a relatively meaningless and dated statement
"Windows Mobile" is a marketing term for certain versions of WinCE (AKA "Windows CE")
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Mobile
PMC (Portable Media Center) is technology built on top of WinCE.
There is no one thing called "Embedded Windows". It is a marketing term for several versions of Windows, including WinCE and Windows XP Embedded.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Embedded

So to put it more simply: everything is using Windows CE -- the GigaBeat-S, the newer GigaBeat models, the original Zune and the current Zune 2s. BUT not the GigaBeat-F or -X models (which have a Rockbox alternative)

At many levels these WinCE devices are remarkably similar. There are important differences, but that's mostly how the devices connect to a PC and copy over media files.

I used to work for Toshiba Customer Support when the S series was in circulation, and if memory serves, the S series never had it's own software, it just used Windows Media Player.
In order to restore the unit, you had to use the Format feature in WMP10 or 11.

I found that my Gigabeat (great player while it lasted! Head crash ended its days, lol) tended to erase itself whenever the battery went dead... As long as I kept it from powering off due to low battery, I never had an issue with it.

Then again it was off for maybe 2 days in the 10 - 12 months I had it...
