I was told by wikipedia that the following of power metal in the United States flies so far under the radar that it's classified as "underground". Brutal.
Let's test that theory, who here other than me listens to power or progressive metal?

You should list some bands instead of silly 'genres.'

They seem like underground to me. I have not heard of any of those bands.

Power/Prog. Metal is far more popular across the Atlantic because that's where the major influences have all come from--that is, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath (to some extent an influence), and, of course, Iron Maiden (which should be credit to birthing the whole genre, really). On top of all that, listeners in the States don't seem to go for the subject-matter of the Prog./Power Metal songs (e.g., wizards, dragons, ninja legends, and swords).
With that said, several bands from the States have managed to break out of relative obscurity (though still not enough, I don't think, to show up on Headbanger's Ball--if that show is still on). Jag Panzer and Iced Earth both come to mind (though I'd prefer Panzer, personally, for the vocal style). Then there's Dragonforce, which I'm quite sure many of you know--if only for that one song of theirs that will never really die: Through the Fire and Flames. But, as many of the more "popular" bands in this genre, they come from Britain.
A couple more names that I'd add to the excellent list that Marshillboy put together:
(1) Iron Savior -- British band, fast, clean vocals, and sing about the same things that most Prog./Power Metal bands do: wizards, titans, heroes, and all that jazz.
(2) Primal Fear -- I believe they're British (and a favorite band of Rob Halford from Judas Priest). Listen to the Nuclear Fire track to get a good flavor of what "good" Prog./Power Metal can sound like. The rest of their catalogue is somewhat hit or miss.

That's about it for me, I think.

Yeah, in the United States as well as Canada, most people generally only know of the popular bands such as the ones you stated (Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, and Iron Maiden), even if they do not like that kind of music. People (around here) do not usually know about the lesser-known bands because they are not mainstream.

Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.
I listen to power and progressive metal. They're not the only subgenres of metal I listen to though. I'm a huge metalhead and listen to pretty much every subgenre.
I've heard of every band you listed, except for maybe 'Picture'. Not familiar with them. I wouldn't really consider Turisas power or progressive. I could maybe see why you'd think power, but I consider them folk metal more than anything else. Great band though! Saw them live at Pagan Fest in 08 - was an awesome performance, though Ensiferum was the highlight of the show for me.
well another reason is this is a mostly conservative conuntry as well, but other than that group, others just have different taste.
my favorite band would be intense by the way, they have a completely opposite take on the usual power metal, darker, if you will. it says their progressive, but i think not.
