Good horror movies come from the 70's, 80's, and sometimes the 90's when there wasn't that much computer animation involved. Looked much more believable that I liked was....

1973's The Exorcist-was scarry when that cute pastor died, I have the DVD: The Version You Have Never Seen.
1974's Texas Chain Saw Massacre-I have only seen clips which scared me and anticipate watching.
1976's The Omen-through part III
1977's The Hills Have Eyes-I have only seen clips which scared me and anticipate watching.
1982's The Thing
1984's A Nightmare On Elm Street-series thorugh V
1985's The Hills Have Eyes part II-was dumb but I was horrified mid through.
1989's Pet Cemetary-including the II which is more scarrier.
and
1994's Children Of The Corn II.
very scarry
I'm not really scared of todays horror movies cause it looks too clean. I just like todays horror movies story-line.

The most recent horror movie that I've seen that I liked would be 1408. Just like how Jon said, not because it's scariest but because of the great plot. I want to see a saw movie though... havent seen even one yet. Not even saw 1 , people say I'm missing out on alot. Gotta hit blockbuster soon and pick me up a few.

Nightmare on Elm Street (Attacking in ones dreams...scary)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the 70s Classic)
Hellraiser (1 and 2, the rest is good for cult material)
The Kingdom a.k.a Riget (more of a series than film)
Stephen King's IT (I dislike clowns)
An Inconvenient Truth (boring but scary fiction)

Absolute favourite... The Ring (Original Japanese film), a film that shows suspenseful atmosphere can be achieved with little CG in an age of CG gluttony.

The Exorcist (extended version)
The Amityville Horror (newer verson, the old one was boring)
Hellraiser 1-4 (kinda fell off around 4)
The Ring (only one, not really number two)
Ghost Story
28 Days Later
28 Weeks Later
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Blair Witch Project (popular to hate, but they played on irrationality and fear so well!)

And dont forget the classics like IT, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street.
You have to always love some of our slasher forefathers, Jason, Freddy, and Michael.
And no one put Jeepers Creepers. No one likes those two movies..not even if you think you do, you really don't.

I like more classic horror movies, such as

The Shining
Psycho
Halloween (Not the Remake)

Ohhh yeah, the shining is a good pick!
Psycho was good for its time.
Halloween is good, but the remake is supposed to be good as well. Remakes can be good if done right.

I can't believe you actually consider things like Hostel and Saw to be horror movies. They were some of the most boring movies I have ever seen. Hostel was basically 30 minutes of porn and drug use and then just violent killings. Saw was almost a horror movie but it just didn't scare me at all. Just because there is a lot of disturbing killings doesn't make it a horror movie.

Oh and I never liked any of the Halloween movies but A Nightmare On Elm Street and Friday The Thirteenth were great. The older movies were so much better.

1408 was really good though. I went to see it in the movie theater a few times then downloaded it.

The Messengers was awesome, too, imo, and When A Stranger Calls, I don't remember if I've already listed that one.

Yes, it came on Showtime or TMC channels idk but
I haven't seen the remake of the recent Hills but the old one
Was about
spoiler - highlight to read: the same 2 characters who survived the first one and the wild girl that saved that baby living prosperously as what most survivors of horror eventually do. They are in to motorcross and motrobikes and they get invited to go to somewhere in the west where they have to cross the deserts. The surviving dude didn't want to go scared of the desert so his girlfriend, sister and that wild savage girl who originally survived and saved that baby and even a dog from the first one went as well. They travel and did the same thing they did last time: leave the damn road and they get lost where there were 2 of the cannibals or whatever stalking them. They fall for dumb as hell traps. I didn't see the end because it is really dumb.
Lucky you if the recent remake you saw didn't involve stupidity.

I'm horror movie fanatic!!! I love all kinds of horror movies but if i had to narrow it down to my favorties these are it

George Romero Living Dead Series
Night of the Living Dead (Original and 90's Remake)
Dawn of the Dead (Again both original and Remake...super fast running zombies HELL NO!!)
Day of the Dead (classic!!!)
Land of the Dead (Romero just had to prove he still had it...now the zombies smart as hell too... yeah mankind its over!! I heard and saw the previews for the Diary of the Dead but after reading the reviews....I dont think that one will be a great Romero movie)
Candyman 1& 2 (3 sucked!!!)
The Saw Series (you have to have a twisted mind to come up with those damn types of devices for a movie....ya'll better watch them dudes)
The Hills Have Eyes 1 & 2 (Originals and Remakes)
Nightmare on Elm Street (up to part 3 after that.....well you already know)
Hellraiser (Pinhead nuff said)
Friday the 13th (up until part 7 after that...booooooooo)
Halloween (although part 3 messed it up but when the brought Michael back...then it was all good oh and the Rob Zombie remake wasnt half bad either)
The Grudge (not necessarily gore but that chick is scary as hell!!)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (I wont drive through Texas EVER!!!)

I mean those are just a few like I said I watch horror movies all the time...my son watches them too and he 5....I mean I guess its in our blood because my parents had us watching horror movies at an early age too...

That pituitary case might've kicked my ass a couple of times... Sorry, I'm built like a girl and not a black man, but I'd die before I ever gave Julia Lucai my chocolate milk.
