try this, I got 21 moves, without reading all the stuff below the game. I haven't tried after reading all that stuff(mostly cause it's real confusing...) it's said that there are monks somewhere doing this with 64 disks(averaging one move per second) and that it wll take millions of years, and that when they finsh the world will end.

i figured out if you push the slow or fast button under neath, it can be done in 15! and you can change the number of rings up to 10. I also figured out the way to figure out how many moves it would take to do X nujmber of rings.
(2^X)-1 (i.e. (2^1)-1=1; (2^2)-1=3; (2^3)-1=7; etc.)

I got 17, it's easy if you know how to do it.
I believe your formula is right if memory serves me. I was bored in calc one day a while ago and the teacher mentioned he was having his other class figure out how many moves to do it with 100 disks, so I did it in my head. It's a fun exercise to practise doing it in your head with more and more disks (and if you get real good, you can become good at chess, it's the same tool, being able to visualize the entire board in your head-a prerequisite for being a GM)
