Japan is investigating a potential defect in an early generation iPod nano after one of the players reportedly emitted sparks while recharging.
Japan's trade and economy ministry said local authorities are investigating to find out if a defect affects the lithium-ion batteries installed within the device. The event took place in January in Tokyo. Apple reported the problem to the ministry, no one was injured in the incident. Apple Japan must now find out what caused the fire and report back to the government. Associated Press reveals the affected iPod nano had the model number MA099J/A. Apple has shipped about 425,000 units of the affected model in Japan. The model was discontinued in September 2006. http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,143356/article.html

Wow I'm surprised that my old iPod 20GB with a black and white screen hasn't done that.
Sucks for them I would think that its Japan they have all the latest stuff before us you know?

Probably not, that's Japan, not America.

Hahaha! This is music to my ears. Finally, the Apple fanboys have something of theirs overheat.
This proves Zune is more reliable than iPod. ![]()

Yes My Prayer Has Been Answered!!! This time I'll pray for all the ipods to go on fire....*makes a sinister look*. No but seriously that sucks, just goes on fire while charging...another reason to not buy a ipod. But I guess if your cold and want some more heat in the house.. Go buy an ipod plug it in and let it charge, while having some wooden sticks already under it. Then Bam! Instant bonfire. Then you can start singing some campfire songs with some friends... so I guess it's not a bad thing really.

There are reports about an iPod Touch burning through it's screen and a desk as well. Apple needs to get to the bottom of this. It obviously has something to do with the battery, but whatever it is, they should hurry and figure it out before this becomes "big" news.
