Yep. Earlier versions had a sister program called ImageReady which was used to handle gif and images made in Photoshop. Now they've both been integrated into one program.

Oops. Okay, after further reading, I've discovered that only certain aspects of Imageready were incorporated into newer PS versions. You would need another program of some sort if you wanted the rest of the features. Thank goodness I use PS7. I don't really know all of the details, but apparently what I was told a while back is not accurate.

I'm not sure. I haven't worked with .gifs ever since I upgraded computers. I get grainy .gifs from ImageReady on this computer so I don't use them anymore. Wish I could help. You could always try googling ".avi to .gif" and see what comes up. Google is your friend ; )!
