Well i'm on xp first of all if that might be a clue to my problem i describe. But when i try to install it says i have to download a windows update. So i open internet explorer and go to the update site and download every update, but the one i can't (net frame something and is what i need for the zune software) won't install. I downloaded it but when i try to install it will get maybe 10 percent done than just get an error. I can't figure out how to get it installed is there any guides to fix this so net.framework or whatever will install? It isn't that huge of a problem since i don't own a zune and just use it as my media player, but i do plan to get a zune for my birthday in may (might wait for the next generation) so it will eventually be important.

Sorry if this has already been asked a million times.

The exact name for the file is "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x86" and i've been trying to do some fixes i've seen online but i'm still completely clueless. It doesn't give me an error code of any kind it just informs me that some updates couldn't be installed (which would be all in this case since it is the only update available)

Never mind found the error code under the menu it is "Error Code: 0x643"

This will probably help me search for some answers also.

Have you tried downloading the .net framework installer separately?

I think i figured out how to fix it.

When you try to install an update for the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, or 3.5, you may receive Windows Update error code "0x643" or Windows Installer error code "1603"

i g2g though so i won't be able to finish it til later tonight. I'll post an update so hopefully if someone searches and this thread comes up it will be able to help em out.

God i just did everything on that link i posted but when i went to install the update it said something in the lines of "line blah blah couldn't be found to overwrite blah blah" or something like that. I'll try it again to find out what it said. This is pretty annoying though. It is because i guess i have an earlier version of net.frame or whatever and it is corrupted or something because the new one must replace part of the old one or something. Idk i'm kind of confused but that is what i've got from reading random sites. I probably could do a system restore if i had to but that would waste a lot of my time and who knows if that would solve it for sure.

Edit- guess i'll try the thing on the bottom half. Don't know why my computer is being antisocial.

Yay! figured it out just download this dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip - Windows Live

from here Aaron Stebner's WebLog : Automated cleanup tool to remove the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5

and just follow the instructions. It does what you have to do manually for you and makes it a hell of a lot easier. Now that i got net.frame installed i should be able to start getting the zune software started.

edit 2- Well now that i've installed every update that Microsoft offers on their site, when i unpack the zune software it still tells me i need to update. I'm redownloading the zune software but it still probably won't work. I'll probably just give up for now.

edit-3 after re downloading it, it appears to be working. Almost done downloading the components. Idk why it was acting to funky and i'm not exactly sure how the problem was resolved but it works now and that is all i care about. But i'm not on x64 bit XP though.
