Zune software locks up every few seconds

I recently started getting this issue.

All programs will suddenly lock up without warning for several seconds, every 3-5 seconds if Zune software is open. Even the Zune software itself will freeze.

I'm planning on reinstalling everything, resyncing Zune etc.

But will the Zune software preserve my preferences, my custom album art in some cases, my video metadata etc?

How can I easily just rebuild everything back from scratch, without modifying what I have already?

You may not need to reinstall the software. The software is a resource-heavy program so it may slow your system down (or even freeze things). If you feel your system is pretty good, you may need to do some system cleanups (defragmentation, disk cleanup, etc.) If your system is a little old, there are ways to minimize the lag created by the software. You can tell it to turn off on-screen animations. You can also turn down the priority of the Zune.exe application in you computer's task manager...
