Default Zune software installation can't continue, Windows Media Center isn't supported

Hello everyone! I have encountered a bit of a problem in upgrading from 2.5 to 3.0 software. Whenever I try to install 3.0, I get the following message:

---

Zune software installation can't continue until you've installed one or more updates.

This current version of Windows Media Center isn't supported. Please upgrade your Media Center machine to 2005 with Update 2 or later.

---

I honestly have no idea what to do; the link to Mirosoft hasn't been of much help either. Any help is appreciated!

Sounds like you need to download Service Pack 2. Try installing SP2 from microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&DisplayLang=en. All you have to do is just download, and then install from where you downloaded it from. It'll ask you to reboot your computer, do so, then you should be able to install the new Zune software.

It may also be possible that you're using an older version of Media Center that can't be updated without being upgraded. Right click My Computer, hit Properties, and look for something that says XP Media Center. Does it have 2005 or 2002?

Thanks a lot for the replies. I have Service Pack 3, however, so I don't think that is an issue. After hitting properties on my computer, I see this:

---

System:
Microsoft Windows XP
Media Center Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

---

I'm guessing the whole '2002' thing isn't good. Do I have to upgrade? Or what else can I do?

There is a hack to do it, but if you can buy the latest version it would be better.

Note: Skip the disc step, just get the 3.0 software from Zune.net | Zune.net Home I've already gone through this with someone else who had MCE 2002, so I know it works if you do that.

OK, on the hack, some of the rows I was told to drop using Orca were not present in the file. Should I just keep going?

Well, I can't say for sure, but I can assume so.
