I heard the reason why some of my songs are quieter and some are louder is because of the bit rate. Is there any software that i can use to convert all my songs to a certain bitrate? Preferably freeware.

Your theory of the different volume of the songs are false. Bitrate has nothing to do with the volume of the song.

What you'll need is to apply volume leveling to all of your songs.

The simplest way to do is to add all of your song to WMP library with the audio leveling feature turned on.

The instructions are here.

After you've imported the songs to WMP library, sync the songs to a flash drive. Copy the flash drive's synced content back to your computer and your music should be all volume levelled.

If you wanted to change the bitrate or convert to other format, I highly suggest dBpoweramp. I also suggest converting all of your music to wma 10 pro because it's far more superior in terms of sound quality/size. You'll need to install a free plugin for dBpoweramp in order to convert songs to wma 10 professional.

bitrate will not help no matter what.. just go find a better quality songs... most of the songs you either ripped or downloaded have different sound quality...

Alright i did the instructions part but i dont have a flash drive that works atm. I tried to sync with my portable hard drive but it wasnt an option, so i was wondering how i could do that. I got a program that can balance out mp3 but it wont work for any wma or mp4 that i have.

Do you have a digital camera with reasonable amount of storage space? Or SD cards?

Oh yea i have a SD card but it doesnt hold too terribly much. Ill have to go and find the card reader. Do i use sync and it will make all of them the same audio level or do i use burn?

If you have a camera, you can use it as a card reader and sync the songs from WMP to the camera.

1) Interesting...Why the step to sync files to a flash drive as part of the volume leveling process? It would seem that step does nothing to alter the files...?
2) Be careful converting from one bit rate to another, unless it's converting from lossless to a 'lossy' format. When you go thru an analog to digital conversion (at less than infinite resolution) you 'lose' a small bit of information. If you convert to a higher bit rate, you cannot gain that back. If you convert to a lower bit rate, you lose a bit more info. If you want to 'convert' to a different bit rate, you would be much better off going back to the original analog source and re-ripping it.
I don't know how format converters work, but I would suspect the same problem is possible when you go from wma to mp3 or vice versa...
