Default Question about Video Codecs !

Hi guys,

wwell, I've converted many videos ( from DVD or other formats ) and play them fine on my Zune 80. I am just curious if someone else experiences the same issue :

Using any good ( free or shareware ) conversion program and converting to either MP4 or WMV9 makes the Zune 2 Software NOT re-convert the file during sync.

But converting a DVD or media file with Windows Media v9 to a 640x480 TV resolution takes forever. I tried it with different converters as well as different files and different computers.

Windows Media v7 is much faster, but the file ges re-converted during sync, which again takes time.

My point ( or question ) is : WHY is Windwos Media 9 soooooo much slower that Windows Media 7 when converting to 640x480 ??? Usually newer versions of encoders are better and faster.

Any thoughts on that ?

Probably because the wmv parameters are specific as to what it will not reformat.
However, if you do 640X480 in MP4, it will not reformat on sync. It never has for me anyway.

WM Encoder 9 should be faster (in theory) because it can utilize multiple cores of your computer. Of course, for those with only 1, it's still pretty slow. One of the reasons could be that WM9 is a completely different (and higher quality) codec, so it takes more time

If you want to look at another converter, I've got a list here: http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/gen...softwares.html

O.K., I haven't tried the "MP4 - 640x480" yet, so I'll try this next.

Dizzy, I don't think it's a "converter issue". I mean, it makes no difference if I use some of the free converters or the CucuSoft or XiliSoft, etc. It's the issue with the CODEC. O.K., my comp does noit have a dual-core, but that the conversin time of ( let's say ) of a DVD to wmv 640x480 takes about the lenght of the movie with Windows Media v7 codec and takes 10 or more hours with the Windows Media v9 codec.

Yes, it's higher quality, but 4 - 5 times longer encoding ?? hmmmm It's strange.

Well, I'll try the MP4 640x480 next and will see how long that takes.

Thanks.
