Each time I start Zune software I get "Zune encountered a critical error and needs to close...." I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software with the same result. Version is 2.3.1035.0 and has not worked since install.

Try restarting your computer and run as administrator.
But don't use UnZoone because it's not working for 2.3 update.

Another reason for me not to update. This is just bad.

I did not use UnZoone. and have reinstalled the software multiple times with multiple PC restarts. I also went into the registry and deleted Zune references. I also updated my .NET framework to 3.0. All with the same error pop-up.

System restore as last resort. Or you can call Zune Support but I doubt they can help you.

Not sure how related this is, but I was using Zune 2.3 today and managed to cause an "unexpected error" by sorting by Artist ascending in List view. It crashed out, with the "Zune has encountered an unexpected error", yada yada. Each time after that, my software wouldn't load - and the same message would appear.
My fix: In Registry Editor (BEWARE! Registry editing can royally screw up your computer if you're not sure what you're doing) navigate to [HKCU]\Software\Microsoft\Zune\Shell. If TrackListSortAscending is set to 1, change it to 0, and exit. Then restart the Zune software. That fixed my issue, although if I sort by Artist in List view, it comes back, and I have to repeat the process all over. Microsoft needs to mull this one over? TRK |

Nicely done. That's generally a safe area to mess around but you're right, it's not for novice users.

hey Buddy,
Are you using Windows XP or Windows Vista? If XP, go to this location: C:\Documents and settings\All users\DRM and rename DRM and restart the Zune Software. If is it Vista, go to this location: C:\Programdata\Microsoft\Windows\DRM Rename DRM and restart Zune software. I had the exact same critical error and I just spent 3 hours on customer support and they helped me fixed it! The error is related to the DRM being corrupted. So do this:
1.) Open up Control Panel and click on "Tools" then "Folder Options", then "View" and then check "show hidden files and folders" and then scroll down and un-check the box called "Hide protected operating system [Recommended] files. Make sure it is not checked. It will prompt you with a warning but don't worry just click yes. 2.) Go to C:\Documents and settings\All users\DRM. Right click and rename the DRM folder to DRMbackup. If Vista go here, C:\Programdata\Microsoft\Windows\DRM. 3.) Open Internet Explorer and go to this URL, http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/t...isplayLang=en# Click start download and run, when opened just go through this software update and it will update/install the DRM correctly. 4.)Launch your zune software and hopefully if all is well this will have fixed the error 5.)Lets hope you don't make it to 5, but if you do it could be that your .NET Framework 2.0 needs fixed and to do this go to add and remove programs and remove .NET Framework 2.0, Then use this link to reinstall .NET Framework 2.0. http://www.update.microsoft.com/wind....aspx?ln=en-us |

Thanks!I had this problem and your post fixed it. I thought the world (even MS) was finally dumping the entire DRM crap. Oh well. As long as work-around knowledge is shared then we will win. DJ Quote:

I have the same issues, I open Zune Software, then "Critical Error". I went into c:\programdata\microsoft\windows, and I dont see a DRM folder. If I type "c:\programdata\microsoft\windows\DRM" into the address bar, I can get into the folder, but I can't rename it from there. I've set it to show hidden icons, but still nothing.

Unzoone'd, reinstalled software, still same crap. Don't think I'm gonna keep my zune, especially if I can't use it without that crap software. Even my Ipod worked out of the box, as garbage as iTunes is, it works.

Ok, so apparently, the Zune software is having problems, but instead of downgrading and doing all that complicated stuff you have tried, maybe the problem is a security component upgrade. Just google search microsoft security component upgrade (You do have to be in Internet Explorer though.) This fixed my Zune software.
