Default Best conversion settings

Hello,

Im newer to the Zune.. I have the 2nd generation 80gb Zune. I have done searches and cant finalize what I should do. So far I am using Super to convert my video files to work with my Zune. I have a total of 20 gigs of music, 5 gigs of pictures on my Zune now. So I have 50 gigs plus for my videos. I know Super as a preset setting for Zune, but what can I change in my setting or another program I can use to get the best quality out of my videos? I have plenty of space so I want it to be the best if I decide to play it on a Widescreen LCD or a regular TV. Right now I have 17.6 gigs of best format videos (not HD) on my PC, but when I convert them to work with my Zune it brings it down to about 1.5 gigs. So I would say Im loosing alot of quality? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Chris

Try these settings:
WMV
720*480
1500kpbs

That is high quality Zune 80 format.

I normally use these settings which work well for playback on my Zune:

Video Codec: WMV 9
Video Bit Rate: 700 kbps
320x240
30 fps

Audio Codec: WMA 9.2
Audio Bit Rate: 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz, Stereo CBR

The max audio bit rate is 192 kbps, but I reduce it to 128 kbps to save on file space.

He's using an 80 though, so he gets more space and higher supported resolution ; )

What software are you two using? I am using Super and the settings arent exactly what you two are saying, so I get something close and it says the overall bitrate should not exceed 800kps.. for Zune (That is for video and audio combined.).. Any suggestions or help? I have a lot of files to convert and trying to avoid doing it over a couple of times.. Thanks for the input!
Chris

Check the list of freeware converters http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/gen...are+converters.

Maybe Super is screwing something up.

I'm pretty sure that's a legit message. Maybe you should just decrease the video bitrate a little.

I'm using Window Media Encoder 9 (check out my web blog to see how I convert my video files).

Ok I figured those settings out.. Would that get me excellent video quality when I play it on my 42 inch Sharp Aquos?
Thanks,
Chris

I use the exact same settings, the quality is very good even when connected to a TV through the zune.

Ok.. I hate to say it, but I have one more question. Here is what I converted my files to using super:

720:480
Aspect 3:2
Frame 30 sec
Bitrate 1488
Audio Bitrate 128

Now when I sync these files to my Zune it converts them before transferring them.. Making this take a long time. It doesn't change the file size by much either. Why is this converting the files before transferring them?

Thanks,
Chris

Because those settings are eccentric and over the top for a device that maxes out at 320x240.
When your settings exceeds the accepted output by the zune it will convert it to the proper format.
So, stick with the basic settings. I have outstanding video quality on 320x240 MP4 video at 128vbr audio at 23.975 (close enough) frames a second.
I have tried a lot of things. I found out, KISS. Keep It Simple, Stupid.

Question for "Cohoman" :

What is your "time-experience" when encoding .VOB files to Windows Media 9 ?? I mean, how long does it take to convert a full lenght ( 2 hour ) movie from ripped .VOB files to a .WMV ( WM ) file ?

Thanks
