Super also appears to work well now.

Now using Format Factory. Conversion to MP4 is nice and fast and file size is small.

Has anyone used MobiDVD? I'm trying to rip the Office Space dvd and it's taking like 60 hours. Is that normal?

It took 9 hours to rip 14 minutes...

Now using Format Factory. Seems to work pretty good and much faster. About 40 minutes to rip a DVD. It automatically converts it to whatever format you choose.

why does the zune not come with any video converting software to begin with ?

the whole converting and ripping is so fustrating I tried using MobiDVD but when I click DVD the whole thing freezes and non of the programs work what a bummer

Sorry about that; I haven't tested all of them and sometimes you get what you pay for.

I'll look around for a few more higher quality ones

i have found some converters that arent freeware persay...but i wont mention them here as it is forbidden, but i can say i dont reccommend purchasing any IMToo's products with out looking else where first, as they are hit or miss, with random fails! and audio/video issues, but convert to many formats with a wealth of advandced controls and options

i used format factory to rip a movie to my computer which it converted to wma and i was wondering what i have to do now to put it on my zune

WMA? Do you mean .wmv? You need it to be .wmv or .mp4 for it to play. If it's not the right resolution, the zune software will also need to convert it, adding 2 hours to the sync time >.<

So which of these converts will put the subtitles track onto the movie? I tried Super so far and didn't see a way to do it on that.

Hi all, whenever I go to convert from dvd in format factory i get a box that comes up saying "loading... please wait" that just sits there and doesn't go away or anything, it's not converting or anything, i cant cancel it, and it is really slowing down my computer, any idea why and what I might be doing wrong???

I personally use Free Zune Video Converter 1.1 (FZVC) (listed in original post I believe) for files that are already on my hard drive in one format or another. Right now I am converting an AVI to mp4 (MPEG4/AAC) at 1300 kbit/s in 640x480 res. I like to put them at 640x480 so I can plug it into my tv at home sometimes. Saves me from having to also burn the movie onto DVD.

For ripping from a DVD to put on the Zune, I use DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink to get the .vob files onto my hard drive. I find that it is easier if you tell (thru the options) DVD Shrink to create a single vob rather than split it.
At this point, I load (by drag n drop or thru add menu) the .vob file into FZVC and convert using one of the profiles. I generally use what I listed above, although some may like a smaller file size (just drop the bitrate to 600 or 800). I like the FZVC software as it comes with preset encoding profiles to choose from, and it lets you create and save your own custom profile. It will automatically load the last profile used on startup.

If the DVD is protected then I use DVD Decrypter to rip the movie to a single .vob file (not split which is the default setting) according to this guide. DVD Decrypter isn't developed any more so if it won't work for a movie with newer protection schemes I have heard that DVDFabHD (free version) is good.

I have recently saved up the money for AnyDVD which is worth every thing I paid for it! With it I can use DVD shrink no matter what protection the disc uses. This saves me much time as AnyDVD decrypts on the fly thus eliminating a step. Then just use FZVC to convert it to mp4.

-----I installed piratebay's ViO and it seems to be geared only towards cellphones and the iPod. Fancy with it's pics and all, but I would still prefer FZVC for the Zune.

Fair Use Wizard 2 does a great job converting from DVDs (or ISOs) to MP4 format. Only the full version (that you have to pay for) has the fully automatic Zune presets, however the author made the full version of 2.8 available for free for a while, and many sites still have an archive of that 2.8 full version. Here's one...

The current version is 2.9, so you're not really missing much by using 2.8 instead. Plus, you can't argue with free.

If you don't like the way it crops widescreen content, you can still use the Zune presets but not "fully automatic" mode, just move through the wizard manually and change the cropping to whatever you want. By default, extreme widescreen content ends up letterboxed on the Zune. My friend prefers to have the sides cropped so that it fully fills the vertical instead.
