Default Importing: Wrong Track Information

I have some files imported from mix cd's that are not importing with the correct information. I edited all the information using iTunes (originally the file names were simply Track 1, Track 2, etc. all with unknown artists and albums) so that all the information is correct. When I import the fiels into the Zune software, however, it gets all of the info right except for the album name and album artist. It seems to pick one song at random, and atribute all the songs to that album and album artist. The Zune software was not open at any time during the importing and editing process, so I really have no idea where it's getting the wrong info from. Any ideas?

try using MP3tag to edit all your media

The only reason I like doing it in iTunes is because it will also move and rename the files based on the changes I make (side question: does the Zune software do this?) I also should mention that the tags are correct when I view the files in windows explorer, and the files are in the correct folders based on the info I put in with iTunes.

Yeah, I know better than to not list all that I've done to fix the problem myself, but I did it anyway... here's what I've tried:

1. Changed the settings to not update all the info, just what was missing

2. Used the reset tool (this fixed one problem, becuase originally the software would change it back when I tried to manually change the information)

3. Screamed angrily at computer

Like I said, I can now edit info manually, but I'd rather just not have to change it at all.

The Zune software currently does not do this. If you are up for trying a different tool, you might give MediaMonkey a try:

This is done via the Auto-Organize Files function, which uses existing Track properties to move and rename files according to a specified format. For instance, you could organize all of your Tracks in the following format: C:/Music/<Artist>/<Album> - <Title>.xxx . To do this:
  1. Select the Tracks that you wish to reorganize/rename, and click Tools > Auto-Organize Files.
  2. Choose the Directory, directory format, and filename format to be used for the Tracks. See Configuring Directory and Filename Formats.
  3. A list will be generated showing the current directories/filenames and the new directories/filenames (changes are highlighted in yellow). If any of the new directories/filenames are incorrect, edit them as needed by clicking the path and editing it, or uncheck them.
  4. Enable 'Delete emptied folders' if you wish the folders to be deleted after all tracks have been removed.
  5. Click Ok to commit the changes to all the checked Tracks.

When Tracks are re-organized, it may result in old directories becoming empty. If this occurs, you will be prompted whether to delete the empty directory. If the all Tracks in the folder are moved, then you'll also be given the option to move any accompanying files such as Album Art or Lyrics.
You can also move/rename by right clicking on a file and editing the properties. I believe this may be a feature you can toggle on and off. When organizing my library, I noticed that it actually moved files when updating from Amazon.

For example, I had 3 songs from the Police in different directories. I found a Greatest Hits that had all three and decided to use the info for those tracks instead of the original album info. After tagging, I found all of the files together in a single directory that matched the name of the Greatest Hits album.

MediaMonkey is a free download.

Now to make matters worse, after I took the time to manually change all the information so it was correct, it seems as though the software has decided to go ahead and change it back for me. Theres no reason that I can think of why the software would be doing this. I imported, re-tagged, renamed, and moved all the files while the zune software was closed, so I see no reason why it should be doing this.

I think I figured it out...the trick is not to use any programs made by the same companies. I used media player to rip the cd's, which probably gave it some special microsoft info that made it keep changing back. I tired re-ripping using media monkey to rip, and then tag the songs, and it looks like all is well. I'll mark this thread solved once I do it a few more times and make sure it's working. Thanks for the help everyone!

If you're ripping as WMA, you may be onto something.
Also be sure you don't have it set to automatically update album information.

When you reimported, did you use the media collection reset tool?

I've tried this and it literally messed up every single song.
The song name was applied to the Artist name, so on the Zune it displays it like this.

"Name of the song"
"Album"
"Name of the song" - instead of Artist name.
I could do all the songs manually since the artists name is a folder directory, but that won't be to fun with 1k+ files.
Is there a way to undo this?

Unfortunately, no. I'd recommend MusicBrainz Picard, as it might make things a little easier

Those are some strange results. How much information is in the name of the file? If you are leery of using MediaMonkey, you might look for another tool that will parse the filename and populate mp3 tags.

I have used a program called Magic File Renamer in the past with great success although I have seen suggestions for quite a few others. If the information is in the name of the file, you should be able to parse it out and populate the tags without having to key in a lot of information.

What settings were you using in MediaMonkey when it updated incorrectly?

MediaMonkey has the ability to tag off the filename, but it's limited and I'm guessing that's what the user did (and it flipped them).

Yeah, it was definately an issue of shady, back-alley dealings between WMP and the Zune software. I've been importing using media monkey, and all is now well. Thanks for all the help. I'd change the topic to solved, but since it looks like someone else is having a problem, I'll leave it as is.
