Default Vista won't install Zune properly!?!?!?

Hi, I am having some troubles with my Zune and need some help!

I have a 30 gb Zune with version 1.4 firmware, and my laptop is running Windows Vista with version 2.1.888.2 of the Zune software on it.

The problem i am having is that windows will not properly install my zune, and therefore it wont show up in the zune software, so i cant sync anything to it.

The wierd part about this is that it worked fine before. At the time, I had software version 1.0.xxxx on it, and it worked perfectly with my zune. Then i tried to sync my friend's Zune, which has firmware version 2.2 on it, to my laptop for him. It didn't sync for some reason, and then windows wouldnt recognize my zune when i tried to sync it.
So to try and fix this, i installed the newer version of the software (2.1.888.2) on my laptop. However this didnt help anything.

The basis of the problem lies in the driver Vista is trying to install, I believe. When I go to Device Manager, the icon for my Zune shows up under the "other devices" category. However, there is a yellow triangle by the Zune icon. When you click on properties, it gives error code #1 (this device is not configured correctly), and it asks me to reinstall the drivers. So i point the installer to the Zune/drivers folder. It tries to install, but brings up this error message: Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it (code 1).

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the device numerous times and it makes no difference.
If i disable the device and re-enable it, then it says that "no drivers are installed for this device". If i try to install the drivers from there, it says the installation was a success, but then it once again lists "no drivers are installed for this device"

After that, if i unplug the zune from the USB port and plug it in again, then Device Manager gives me error code #18 (reinstall the drivers for this device) which just starts the whole cycle all over again!!!!!!

This is really starting to bug me. I have tried basically everything, from reinstalling to rebooting to enabling and disabling.
If I can get ANY help on this topic it would be GREATLY appreciated!!! Thanks!

Yep, that was it. I downloaded it again form official Zune site and it worked. Now lets see how this software works (or doesn't)...

Download/launch Windows Installer CleanUp Utility and "Fix" anythign with Zune in the name and try again.

You might have to bypass the main installer by using the straight msi file instead of the flash menu installer:

1) Download and install winRAR
2) Download the software from the Zune.net website. Be sure you "save as"
3) Navigate to where you saved the download
4) Right click on the file and select Open with winRAR
5) In the packages folder, double click Zune-x86.msi
6) Wait for the installation dialog to close

So your telling me i need to install this - "Windows Installer CleanUp Utility" to fix my driver problem, or are you talking to the guy who was having software issues??? I am a little confused. I think this thread is headiing off course.

If you werent telling me to install that for my driver issues, then maybe i will try unzoone...it hopefully will work

You can't use the new software with the old firmware.

Then how would I possibly update my firmware so I can get it working again, and also how could that be the reason since it only happened not that long ago(forgot to state that)

Edit: My Zune firmware is 2.3
