A few weeks back I posted a quickfix to bypass the "Zune has encountered an error and needs to close" and "Zune has stopped working" errors when you launch the software by running it compatibility mode for Windows 2000. Although this allowed you to start the program, it still bugged other things and the software still crashed when you sync'd podcasts, and would not allow you to visit the marketplace.
MS/The Zune Team and I have recently been working together and trying things and we have found a solution that works that lets you access everything without bugs, and works on all supported Zune operating systems.
1.) Turn-off the compatibility mode for Zune if you had it on. This is essential here in order to verify the effectiveness of this.
2.) Follow the steps in the following KB Article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929642 and although the KB article doesn't really mention this crash issue, it should address the problem. Please be sure to note the possible consequences regarding content licenses mentioned in there. Also in step (d) Internet Explorer should be running as Administrator.
3.) After successfully performing all steps in the KB, try to start Zune again (with compatibility mode turned off).
This completly fixed it for me and now I fianlly get to see what I was missing.
Yea, it helps alot. I'm just glad I finally got an official work-around, because obviously the compatibility change was not working for people on XP.
That thread was so buried on those forums, like on page 185, it shocked me when the zune team member replied last night after all this time with a responce and then he posted a fix as of today.
I personally tested it and it works. I nearly fell out of my chair because if I would have known the DRM component was responcible for the .Net 2.0 dll crash this entire time I would have been madder then I am now. I've never bought DRM music in either a digital or physical format and I have never been affected by the DRM debate until now because of a build-in windows vista component, and now I want to lanch a ballistic missle at Sony HQ for starting to put DRM protections on music to begin with.
I don't find where can i turn off the compability mode for zune.

I do all the things of this page but zune Software crash on start again.

I was having the exact same problem where zune would crash on start up. Tried reinstalling and everything, downloaded this program and all works now.
Thanks for the info, saved me what hair I have left.
