Common Problems With the Zune Software and How to Remedy them Updated as necessary Things to Consider Before Hope is Lost -Problems have been known to occur when people use USB hubs or extension cables. ONLY use your sync cable -Consider the requirements. Do you have the latest version (3.0) of the .NET framework? And so on. -Run Windows Update, select Custom, and download everything. They're there for a reason. A common misconception is that Automatic Updates cover everything when in reality, they only download required updates. -Search this Board and for that matter, search Google. A lot of these questions have been answered before. -Don't try to fix something if you don't know what you're doing. Ask for help. That's what we're here for. Thread Discussion: Pretty much this whole forum Installing on non-US Windows by bypassing Windows Update 1) Download and install winRAR 2) Download the software from the Zune.net website. Be sure you "save as" 3) Navigate to where you saved the download 4) Right click on the file and select Open with winRAR 5) In the packages folder, double click Zune-x86.msi (or fr/es for french/spanish) 6) Wait for the installation dialog to close. Thread discussion: http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/gen...ws-update.html Library Build Problems Automatic Method: Download the official MS Media Reset Tool here: http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=7912818 Thanks Justananomaly Thread Discussion: http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/gen...eset-tool.html Manual Method: There's a file that contains metadata about your tracks. If you delete that while the client is not running then restart the client, it is rebuilt automatically. It does NOT delete your music, just the metadata. Here are the instructions. Please make a copy of the file before deleting it. In XP Zune2 software stores it's database in the folders XP C:Documents and Settings<User Name>Local SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftZune Vista C:Users<User Name> Application DataLocalMicrosoftZune * Exit Zune2 software * Delete files in this folder * Restart Zune2 software and it will rebuild your collection. OR, if you don't want to delete anything: * Exit Zune2 software * Rename the following two files in the correct folder above: o rename ZuneStore.sdf ZuneStore.sdf.old o rename CurrentDatabase_365.wmdb CurrentDatabase_365.wmdb.old * Restart Zune2 software and it will rebuild your collection. Thread Discussion: http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/gen...x-i-think.html Installation Fine but Blank Zune Window/Garbled Colors Exit the Zune software 1) Start->Run->regedit 2) Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Zune\GeneralS ettings 3) Right click and click New->DWORD Value. Name it ReevaluateVideoSettings 4) Right click again and create a new DWORD Value. Name it UseGDI. 5) Press enter, then right click it again and click Modify 6) Change the Value Data to 1. It should be hexadecimal by default. Restart the zune software. It worked for me! Thread Discussion: http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/gen...good-ones.html Missing Package on Install If you've experienced problems installing the latest Zune software and setup tells you that you are missing a package, please download the following bundled installer. http://www.anonym.to/?http://downloa...unePackage.exe 1. download package 2. run package to extract to your computer 3. go to directory that you extracted to, run startzune.exe 4. proceed with installation, following instructions Thread Discussion: http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/gen...-problems.html Reserved Space Issue All you have to do is delete all the data off of the zune. Click settings, device, then press erase all content. The problem is that the zune already had data synced onto it with the old software and the data is still on there. By erasing all of it, the amount available will go up. Credit to folta Thread Discussion: http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/gen...er-if-any.html Deleting Content From Library but not Zune Not the most sophisticated way, but it gets the job done. After you finish syncing, go to the software settings, click "Device" and then click "Forget this Device". Disconnect and you can delete all you want. You'll have to do this every time you connect. For a more permanent fix, if you've got multiple users on your computer, login as another user and open the zune software. When the dialog box pops up, select "Link Zune". Log out of that user. Log back on to your profile and open the zune software. There will now be an option to connect as a guest. This is what you want. Thread Discussion: http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/gen...ting-zune.html Wireless Sync Only Goes To Connecting But Does Not Connect To PC All i did to fix this problem was Start> control panel> administrative tools> services Zune Bus Enumerator is Started but u have to restat Zune Network Sharing Service this was off for me i started it so if it is for u start it Zune Wireless Configuration Service it was started but do not restart Credit to ghostz Note: Rumor has it that Zune30's don't support wpa2 Thread Discussion: http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/gen...m-no-more.html Wireless Sync Issues (for those with Windows Live One Care) 1. Start One Care and select "change One Care settings" 2. Select the Firewall tab and click Advanced Settings 3. Under Programs, make sure all Zune programs are allowed. There should be at least two but there was three on mine, allow all of them. 4. After, select Ports and Protocols tab. Make sure the following are checked; ActiveSync, ICMP Outbound, Streaming Video/Audio (IGMP), and Xbox 360 and Network Media Players, if its there. 5. Once finished select Managing and Sharing tab and make sure the following are checked\/ -> Only share them with computers on my local network (subnet) and -> Only computers on my local network (subnet) 6. Click apply and your finished Thanks n8dogg4life! Thread Discussion: http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/zun...-answered.html Can't download Explicit Content So long as the account you sign in to is associated with a parent account, you're not going to be able to download explicit content. Age doesn't matter, even if you are over 18. Even if you sign on to the parent account and allow everything, the pass won't work with them. I know it's a pain, but your best bet is to create a new Windows Live ID. Make sure you're over 18. Then you shouldn't have any problems. Thread Discussion: http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/zun...issue-wtf.html Install Driver Fail/Remove Driver Fail/RollBack Error/Error 0x80070643: Method 1: After 90 minutes on the phone with tech support, we ended up downloading a MS program called "Windows Install Cleanup." I believe it erases the active program files so your computer doesnt think its there. Once I did that, the new version installed just fine. I believe I was getting the same error codes as you. Thanks speedster00 Method 2: Alright guys! MyJules, a Zune Team Member on here, has been communicating with me and just sent me an email that fixed my install. I don't recommend this to anyone just yet who is not comfortable using regedit. Make a restore point before doing this. What you need to do is go here in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Win dows\Installer Then create a new DWORD value and name it: DisableRollback Then modify it to 1 close regedit and reboot.........install the zune software Setup will still fail but it will NOT rollback. Check and see if you have zune files or not on your system. It should be in c:\Program Files\Zune Then you can click on zune.exe in that folder. Now mine did come back up and say there was an update to 2.1 again and went back thru the install and error out, but it's installed and working. After you have the software on and working, I was advised we should delete that registry key. I really hope this works for you all that are having the 80070643 error and my sincere thanks to the Zune team members for their hard work!!! Thanks TUNDRA35 Method 3: Turn on Windows Firewall. That's it... Thanks LokiCaprion Thread Discussion: http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/zun...x80070643.html AND http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/zun...e-posting.html Crash on Start 1.) Turn-off the compatibility mode for Zune if you had it on. This is essential here in order to verify the effectiveness of this. 2.) Follow the steps in the following KB Article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929642 and although the KB article doesn't really mention this crash issue, it should address the problem. Please be sure to note the possible consequences regarding content licenses mentioned in there. Also in step (d) Internet Explorer should be running as Administrator. 3.) After successfully performing all steps in the KB, try to start Zune again (with compatibility mode turned off). Thanks, Justananomaly! Thread Discussion: http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/gen...ash-start.html Removing Duplicates Method 1: To remove duplicates: 1) Back up content by reverse syncing 2) Reset your device 3) Press and hold the back+center+right buttons (during the reset) and the zune will delete everything on it except the firmware. 4) Sync back content (minus the duplicates). You should be good to go. Method 2: 1) Install the HDD Hack: http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/zto...tch-4-0-a.html 2) Using Windows Explorer, go to My Computer and find your Zune 3) Navigate to the music folder and delete the duplicated songs off the zune manually. Thread Discussion: There are many around Zune Bus Root Enumerator/Zune Installer Rollback Error Fix I renamed the C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\wdf01000.sys file to wdf01000.sys.bak (it was not being used by any processes) and the Zune install finally completed normally. No exclamations in Device Manager and functioning "Zune Bus Enumerator" and "Zune Bus Root Bus Enumerator" devices. Thanks Stager! Thread Discussion: http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/gen...numerator.html Problems Installing Software 2.3 ALL the written stuff below was done in WinXP Pro SP2 and all UPD's !!! 1. Setup Failed Error : " Operation "InstallDriver" has finished with result 0x80070643 " " Operation "RemoveDriver" has finished with result 0x80004005 SOLUTION : Go to C:Windows\System32\Drivers and look for a file called : wdf01000.sys !!! Rename or Delete this file. 2. Setup Failed Error : "Service 'Zune Network Sharing Service' (ZunenetworkSvc) could not be installed. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services. Error code : 0x80070643 SOLUTION : Go to START / RUN and type : services.msc Once the Services Window Is open, go to the bottom, there are either 2 or 3 Zune related services. Make sure they are all set to "automatic" ! Now right click on the "Zune Network Sharing Service" and select "Properties" !!! Click the "Log On" tab and make sure it is set to : "This Account" then click "Browse", then "Advanced", then "Find Now" and select "NETWORK SERVICE" ! OK everything and if you are asked for a password, put your Administrator password in it ! 3. Zune Bus Root Bus Enumerator error ( I believe this error only occurs if someone uses a cradle ): Hardware Wizard constantly finds the Zune Bus Enumerator SOLUTION : Disconnect your cradle. Go to Device Manager, scroll down to "System Devices" and uninstall all "Unknown Devices" as well as all "Zune Bus..xxx...Enumerators". Restart your computer, plug in your cradle and you should be fine ! Hope this helps some other folks. Credit to jce2005 Thread Discussion: http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/gen...tml#post150847

Thanks Greg. Surprisingly, we're handling the volume of support requests pretty well.
Anyone else can feel free to post something they feel is a common issue (if it's got a fix associated with it)

Well, I'm not guaranteeing they'll work, they are just some place to start. Hopefully they will though.

I got a similar error on install telling me that zune.msi could not be accessed due to a network error. I tried all the solutions above, but they didn't work. I just updated from IE6 to IE7, ran Unzoon to uninstall the old version, then ran the Zunepackage download. It installed without any problems and updated my zune firmware. YeHaa. Only took me a couple hours to figure out.

For some reason I dont have the "Zune" folder in this path:
XP C: Documents and Settings<User Name>Local Settings>Application Data>Microsoft>Zune It ends at "Microsoft" for me Edit: I finally found those files. But now, the zune program is telling me that my Zune is linked to another computer. Should select "Link my Zune to this computer?" or what?
