Here's an odd one for you. A quick search of the forums (admittedly, perhaps not a thorough one) didn't reveal a similar problem.
I have a Zune 30 I just got, and installed the software and connected the device. The device was detected fine, but the software displays a blank box with what appear to be three buttons that are also blank. Nothing I do gets the software to talk to the Zune, or even moves it off this screen. The buttons do nothing, and all I can do is go into task manager to kill it. When I end task, the Zune software appears to wake up briefly, then it ends as I asked. Any ideas? I've deinstalled and reinstalled with no luck. I'm about to try another computer, but I was hoping to get it working on this one first. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions. |

Reboots? Many times.
Screenshot? No, but there's not much to see. It's blank (black) in the "Zune" window except for the three blank (grey) buttons that appear to do nothing. On my 2nd machine, it claims to complete the install, but errors out and advises a reboot and reinstall. Doesn't work. I even installed Windows media player 11 based on advice in other threads. No luck. I'm not impressed yet! Thanks for the thoughts, by the way. Any other ideas? |

OK, problem &1 is solved, I think. But I hate it. I solved it by enabling all kinds of activex control run & download stuff in IE. Then it took off and asked for the Zune connection, and completed the install. So theoretically I can synch music to it now.
The other machine, not so much. Still can't even get the software to install, whether with SZIP or the normal install package. Of course, that's the machine where all my music is... I think I may understand now why nobody complains about their iPod, but you never hear anyone raving about their Zune. MS will never beat Apple at their game with this kind of garbage install process. |

In all fairness, the install works on most of our boxes, so it's probably something you/a program of yours tampered with that's confusing the process.

Pardon me for some frustration. I think I earned it. An install of an MS product on an MS OS using MS instructions ought to be better than that. And as a software developer, I think I'm definitely qualified to say that. And I'm no Apple slappy - I've never used a Mac or an iPod in my life.
I'll grant this - it boiled down to the security settings I use on IE to keep viruses & spyware off my machine. Fine, but it ought to be able to tell me what the problem was rather than throw some generic, unhelpful error message that tells me nothing about how to adjust for the problem. Anyway, thanks to everyone on this board who went before me. I found much helpful info here. Kudos to all who take the time to answer questions... you all rock! |

Oh I know, the installation shouldn't be that temperamental. Plus the MS products should have worked nicely in the first place. But eh, things are bound to go wrong.
