In that article at the end is a link to a more in-depth analysis of it, where they found it out from, etc. etc. But here is what that page says.
Quote:
The internet chapter of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, a secret copyright treaty whose text Obama's administration refused to disclose due to "national security" concerns, has leaked. It's bad. It says:
* That ISPs have to proactively police copyright on user-contributed material. This means that it will be impossible to run a service like Flickr or YouTube or Blogger, since hiring enough lawyers to ensure that the mountain of material uploaded every second isn't infringing will exceed any hope of profitability.
* That ISPs have to cut off the Internet access of accused copyright infringers or face liability. This means that your entire family could be denied to the internet -- and hence to civic participation, health information, education, communications, and their means of earning a living -- if one member is accused of copyright infringement, without access to a trial or counsel.
* That the whole world must adopt US-style "notice-and-takedown" rules that require ISPs to remove any material that is accused -- again, without evidence or trial -- of infringing copyright. This has proved a disaster in the US and other countries, where it provides an easy means of censoring material, just by accusing it of infringing copyright.
* Mandatory prohibitions on breaking DRM, even if doing so for a lawful purpose (e.g., to make a work available to disabled people; for archival preservation; because you own the copyrighted work that is locked up with DRM)
Look at #2. Without trial or anything, you can be permabanned from the Internet (not meant to be funny), and #4 they want DRM on everything so THEY control the music/whatever it is you listen to/use, not you the consumer.
We can't let this get passed. I mean we've had some bad things before, but this is some serious ****. This is what can destroy the Internet as we know it and ruins the last bit of freedom people have.
EDIT: They've analyzed it further, apparently your kids can go to jail (if this actually gets passed) for making fan art or sharing commercial music.
it would very interesting if this gets passed. hackers wouldn't be too happy about it, plus the internet is too big to be "controlled" ...if thats the word.
what happened to freedom that America fought for... isn't this very close to Chinese-style internet use [read socialism]?
@nathan: dude, you cannot get uglier than this... no one can.

There's no way this can ever get passed. The beauty of the internet is the freedom you have online. Obviously, there are still some rules. The thing that pisses me off, though, is that the people who make the laws are stupid politicians. They have no clue how the internet even works. Also, there's no way that we can force other countries to follow our rules, that's simply illegal. Passing this would ensure that other, possibly more severe laws, could be passed with regards to the internet. This is a terrible thing.
Meh, if it's real and the articles I glanced at are accurate, it's bad. Bad enough that if someone tried to get it passed, no one would vote for it. And if it did get passed, it'd just spawn more crime, civil unrest, and a strengthened third party. The government isn't stupid enough to try.
And btw, at j. And I assume you're fine with the Patriot Act, a law that got passed (unlike this alleged planning stage thing).
this is a bunch of extra work for isp's it seems. could see THEM lobbying against it. if im reading right, the isp(not youtube or whatever, but the actual isp) has to spend a **** ton to police the net.

Wow, interesting how you automatically assume you know everything I think!
No. The Patriot Act was unconstitutional.
Damn, that post got deleted, it took me so long.
