How many languages do you speak?

I can only speak english fluently. I can understand some spanish and speak some also. And I know like 3 german phrases XD

Well, English is obvious.

I can speak a little bit of French and Russian, I know a few phrases in Spanish, Italian, German and Japanese and I can understand a tiny amount of Cantonese.

Approximately 1.3 languages. English and enough Spanish to get A+ in Spanish I and II...which isn't that much.

Most people haven't heard of it. Especially in the US. It's more common in Europe and developed asain countries.

Esperanto is an artificial language made by a Polish philosopher and linguist, L.L. Zamenhof. There are even people that are 'natural' Esperanto speakers (Both their parents speak it and the person grew up speaking it).

Yeah, pretty much. He just decided to make one. He meant it to be a "universal auxiliary language.' But as you can see it's not that universal. But it has gotten a lot farther than other languages meant for the same purpose. J.R.R. Tolkien made several languages just because.

So how long has Esperanto been around for?

And it must be very difficult coming up with a whole other language.

The wikipedia article about Esperanto says:

"The word esperanto means 'one who hopes' in the language itself. Zamenhof's goal was to create an easy and flexible language that would serve as a universal second language to foster peace and international understanding."

That is a good idea, having a universal language.....if only it was more widespread.
