Okay well I was cleaning my room listening to my Zune and I pulled it out of my pocket to change the song. I noticed something was wrong. The backlight was on but there was nothing on the screen. I could still hear music through my headphones. I stood and waited for the Zune to shut off (I figured that's what it was doing) for about fifteen seconds. Unsure of what to do, I held the play button until the backlight turned off. It shut off and now will do absolutely nothing. Reseting the Zune doesn't work, my PC doesn't recognize it and neither does the Zune software.
I know the battery was at least 3/4 full at the time of this change.
Hold mode is not active. I have set it to hold and turned off hold multiple times to ensure this.
As of now, it was charged continuously for four hours, up until this point, where I tried to turn it on again.
It pretty much just won't turn back on for anything.
Well, I'm guessing that you have three options at this point. You can: attempt to perform a do-it-yourself repair, buy a replacement, or contact a support service.
The last two are pretty much self-explanatory. If you do the first, start by removing the battery for like 30 seconds and then replacing it into the device.
I can't really give a guess as to what your problem is as I would need more information.
this happened to me before.. i kept tryin to turn it back on over and over, eventually it heated up really good, and drained the battery all the way down and it worked a few days later.

Now you're saying that your Zune actually "heated" up? Could this problem be caused by it being cold? Because right now it is actually pretty cold.

That's one of the problems. I would try to but it's doing nothing to drain the battery. It literally is not doing anything.

How would I provide more information?

My Zune 80 also suddenly completely stopped doing anything at all whilst I was walking up the stairs to a platform at the railway station yesterday. It stopped in the middle of a song, and it didn't respond to any button presses/combinations.
I can only get it to do something if I connect it to my PC, which causes the screen to dimly show the icon of the battery with the lightning bolt for about a second, which then dissappears slowly line by line in a seemingly random pattern, as if the battery is completely dead. This is then repeated several times. If it's just done that, the next time I connect it it won't do anything until I've left it again for a while. It was completely full when I left, and it had only been playing for about 10 minutes.
Anyone got any clue? I'm in the Netherlands, so no hope asking Microsoft.

At least yours is able to display something...Mine doesn't even show up. I haven't seen anything on the screen for two days.
I hadn't noticed it at first because the backlight didn't come on. It's still doing exactly the same right now when I connect it. I'm really getting worried about this.
So the problem is fixed. I do not know why this is happening but my Zune apparently is getting too cold. I'm in Ohio and yeah the weather sucks (already snowing in places) but it's something that didn't happen the last three winters that I've had it. I guess I gotta bundle up to listen to some music.

I know this is a bit off of what was happening to yours, but mine is doing about the same thing; except that it keeps the backlight on and nothing else. I restarted it(about 100 times) and the standard zune screen shows up, but then just cuts to backlight. I've drained it and recharged it then repeated already with no new results. This randomly happened when I tried to restart my zune because it froze. its an 80 and i don't think its the cold because I'm in Georgia and today was mildly hot.
EDIT: So to get an update to everything, apparently the new firmware is totally frying the 80's and if you're not under warranty you're pretty much fu*ked. I spent 2 hours with a "supervisor manager" named abby who in the end said its not a big enough problem to post a warning to 80 users yet. There is one forum on zune.net that has 10 pages and counting of people having this problem too. Microsoft is ****ing up big time on this one and isn't fessing up to what they've done.
