are you running XP or vista?
is it genuine?
have you downloaded all recent windows updates?

its legit, and im performing updates right now, but i dont think that will help. i dropped my zune awhile back, and that was when i got the 'restore firmware'. i thought that if i did, it would be happy again, but idk whats going on with it.

ok. so i did everything you said, again, and i got further this time. the zune software finally recognized my zune, and attempted to update my zune, and just when it was almost done i got this message: your device did not update. error code: C00D1249. what now? and yeah, my warranty is up.

ok i tried updating again, and it kind of worked, now it seems to be stuck on (4)clearing data....and the zune software still says that its updating, but im not sure if my zune is frozen, its been like this for 5-10 minutes.
