Possible Fix For Freezing During Song Change
Hello all. I recently got my Zune 80 and am so far in love with it. The one thing that really upset me, though, was that it tended to freeze (sometimes a few times a day) when switching songs. The track would just be at 0:00 and it would sit there. If I went back to the menu or tried to change to another song, the entire device would lock up and I'd have to reset it.
I tried deleting my entire collection, deleting the firmware, etc., and it didn't solve the problem. I thought I may have a bad unit. I noticed one night that a specific song with a really long name always froze, so I decided to edit the tag and shorten the name. Well, it worked! But there were other songs that froze with short names, so I knew that wasn't strictly the problem. I decided to go through my entire collection and retag everything, deleting all information that I or the Zune doesn't really use (things like lyrics, comments, publishers, etc.). I basically stripped most songs down to only the Album, Artist, Title, Track (when I could). Well, it totally worked! Not only does my Zune no longer freeze (I tried to get it to freeze by switching songs quite quickly), but it also moves to the next track much quicker (the gap is shorter, in other words).
So, to those who are experiencing this problem (and I know there are several of you), re-edit all your tags with something like Mp3tag and take away any information you can. You should notice a big improvement.
