I accidentally touched my Altec Lansing M604 speakerdock while the Zune was in it and playing and gave it a static electricity shock (darn you rubber sole slippers!).
The first time this happened, my Zune 80 wouldn't play audio through the dock port on the M604. I did some combo of resetting the zune, unplugging the M604, etc., and got it to work again.
Then I shocked it again. Now, no matter what I do, it won't play audio through the dock. IT WILL, however, play audio through the generic audio jack in the back, it will still charge my zune, and I can still use the USB port on the M604 to sync with my computer.
Somehow, the static shock *only* took out the ability for audio to play through the dock port.
You are a great moderator I see in almost every thread i read and post in that you are on top of things, giving your opinion, warnings, and advice to others! Keep it up CameleonMK!

Call Altec Support and see if they can do anything.
Thats definitely the best idea.
i dont recommend taking it apart yourself, i speak from experience.
that is unless you know what your doing, then go ahead.
A basic step that you haven't described doing is to simply unplug the unit from the wall for a few hours. Believe it or not, many electronic devices with microprocessors get "confused" by static or surges. After being disconnected from power for a while, their logic circuits can reset themselves. This happens ALL THE TIME with cordless phones and answering machines. (Where I work, after a thunderstorm we'll get a bunch of people bringing in their telephone products claiming they all of a sudden stopped working. I smile politely at them, put it on the counter and plug it in. Viola! It had been unplugged for the time it took to come in, so it straightened itself out.)
Not promising anything, but try it before driving yourself buggy. THEN (after you get it working again) plug the unit into a surge protector! And maybe place it on an anti-static style mat... PC stores should have them.
Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.
I hope they haven't outsourced because then you might not be able to understand the person on the other end of the phone...those conversations suck...try the plug thang first...that might actually work...
Thanks, all. I think I've tried all the suggestions above. I even left it unplugged over night a few days ago hoping the circuits would reset, but to no avail.
I have a ticket in with Altec online, so hopefully I'll hear back soon.
One last silly thing that you've probably done but didn't mention. Is there a button on the dock that switches from the Zune to Aux? You note that you can make it work plugging it in the port on the back with a cable. The speaker docks that I have played with usually have to be "switched" in order to use the Aux port. Perhaps you've done that, and not switched it back to the "dock" connection?
I know, you've probably addressed that, but since you hadn't mentioned it, I thought I better bring it up. I've found over my years of troubleshooting different electronics that sometimes you have to go all the way back to "start" and retrace your steps, no matter how seemingly basic and simple those steps are. (The stories of PC support guys having to ask if the machine is plugged in, turned on, etc, are indeed true!) Anyhow, just thought I'm mention it. There really isn't much to these docks, so the whole thing baffles me, especially as it still charges and plays through the aux port. Very strange.
