So, I seem to have an issue that I can't figure out the solution to. A few minutes ago, when I went to plug my zune in to charge, it decided to not charge. Well, it charges for what can be considered a second or two. The zune turns on as it would when you plug it in to charge, and the battery icon will be filled with the lightning bolt as it does when it is charging, but the icon will soon disappear, and the zune will idle and the screen goes black.
I know that the zune is not charging because I am constantly getting the 'low battery' warning. I have tried resetting it, I've tried all the usb ports on my pc including the back usb ports. Every-so-often, the zune will come out of sleep and the screen lights up, as if it is going to charge, but goes back to sleep a few seconds later with no progression in the charge.
The zune software is also not recognizing the zune as being plugged in, either.
I don't really have the money to just go out and buy a new zune usb wire if I'm not positive that the wire is the issue. I wouldn't quite know where to pick one up at, either, though I could probably find one at Target.
Anyway, though, I was hoping someone could confirm or deny if there is a problem with the usb wire or not, please? That would be awesome
EDIT: So, after leaving my Zune sit out for a night, it died. Like, when I hit the play button, I get that large battery with the plug in the middle symbol. So, to see what happened, I plugged it into my computer. Well, the screen lit up and stayed lit up for a while, with the battery symbol on it. Then, the Zune loaded and went to the main menu, as if it had been charging.
The Zune software then picked up that the Zune was connected to the computer, and I was able to put CDs/Pictures/take them off/etc onto/off of the Zune. After about ten minutes or so, though, it stopped charging and it went into sleep mode, again.
I unplugged it and am going to let it die and see if it does the same thing, just for experiment's sake.

Reason: New information
Wow! Another one! I'm having similar issues, posted in a thread not too long ago. I've visited many Zune forums and I'm coming across tons of these issues since the updates recently. Nobody knows what to do. Tech support just tells me it's dead and buy a new one.
If that's really the only solution to this problem, I'm dumping Microsoft and going back to Apple, and will get an iPoT. That's really a pathetic response to this. How can it go from charging just fine to not taking a charge, at all? :|

Yes, that's basically what they told me. The girl on the phone kept repeating that it was out of warranty and nothing could be done. I know it's out of warranty! I've had it since they first came out!
I've never been a member of any of these Zune forums, but I've been reading every Zune forum I could find over the past few days and have read lot's of identical problems and nobody has heard of it until right around this last update came out. Something is going on.
How recent was the last update? Because I'm unsure if I even got it, or not.
But, yeah, I have been seeing a bunch of people having similar/related issues, and nobody really seems to know what to do besides quote back the 'reset it by holding back and up' kind of responses. I was really hoping someone here would know what's what, because they've helped me in the past on these forums.. I just hope someone figures SOMETHING out, even if it is just what's wrong :|
This is the exact same issue I've been having the past weeks and that I posted in my thread, except that the software never recognized it after it started. I bought new sync cables and those don't solve the issue either, though they DO work with an AP charger. Now I just can't sync stuff. I've been reading around other boards too and haven't been able to find any help.
Based on this, I decided to try charging it via a cheap car charger I got a long while ago. It requires you to use the usb cable that you would use normally to charge it, that just plugs into something that plugs into the lighter of the car. Well, it was charging, and I noticed the battery icon filling up. That was last night, on a two-hour drive. It was plugged in the entire time.
When I had reached my destination, I just took it out of the car with me and didn't check it until earlier today. Well, despite my Zune supposedly charging while I was driving, it was dead not even 12 hours later, and I didn't even have it unlocked so it is not as if it could have been turned on and playing in my bag.
I don't know what to do about this, and am really hoping for some sort of answer to what's wrong with it. I haven't been able to find anything, yet, though.
/sigh/
Looks like I'll have to start saving up, and start re-downloading everything

This sounds like its simply a dead battery. Im not sure if the zune does this, but many portible devices cannot be powered via the charger, and the charger only charges the battery. If thats true, then, you wouldn't be able to use your zune with a dead battery. If you are willing, replacing the battery should be pretty easy, just kinda expensive, as batteries are expensive. Zune eXtended Life Battery: RapidRepair. not too bad. RapidRepair also has guides on how to dissasemble, install, and reassemble the Zune30 with the new battery
I saw somewhere else that someone suggested a dead battery, but also noted that the battery wouldn't really explain why it isn't syncing. Mine will sync for a few minutes if it is completely dead.. Well, at least, it did the first time, I haven't tried it since then. After it gets an initial charge, though, it doesn't sync anymore.
I will try the battery option when I have the cash for it, though. Thanks for the link and the suggestion, Bman~
yes, and as I said, most mobile devices draw power from the battery, regardless of if the charger is plugged in, meaning, if their is nothing to draw from the battery, because it won't charge, because it is dead, it could mean a dead battery. Now im not telling you it IS a dead battery, but it seems like it is one of the more possible problems with your zune.
Happened to me a while back... but i tried 3 things... different computer.... AC power adapter, and FM transmittor... the transmitter works the best for me but you need a car. After I got a full charge from the Transmitter it worked fine, so i always have 3 chargers on me basically all the time in case something like this were to ever happen again to me.
