This thread will be used for future reference by anyone who is having a problem with their Zune. It will make it easier for users to locate and isolate/fix their problems.

No i wanted everyone who had a problem that was solved to post in here. So its a huge thread with all solutions. If someone had a problem connecting their zune, just search this thread (instead of the whole site) for their answer. Make sense yet? Ill start i guess.

Drive Letter Problem

I have had a ext hdd connected for ages, and thats where all my music and programs are installed. I put in a pen drive and turned off the computer while i was out. When i turned it back on, my original hdd, usually F drive had changed to the G drive.. and my pen drive taking over F. Now none of my music works in the zune software, and all my links to programs dont work. I know i can just change them and reroute where zune finds my music. But i dont want to do that. Ive disconnected the pen drive and restarted and t still comes up as drive G. Any way of changing it back to F?

In Vista, you can use the Disk Management console to manage the drives on your computer. One of the things you may want to do at some point is change the drive letter assignments. You can assign any letter between C and Z to a hard disk drive while letters A and B are reserved for floppy disk drives.

To access the Disk Management console, right click Computer and select Manage. Under Storage, click Disk Management. The drive configuration of your computer will be displayed in the details pane. You can change the drive letter by right clicking any volume and selecting Change Drive Letter and Paths. Click the Change button and use the drop down arrow to select the drive letter you want to assign to the volume. Click OK. Click Yes to confirm your actions.

Two points you must keep in mind when performing this procedure. You cannot change the drive letter assigned to the boot or system partition using this method. Second, some programs may refer to specific drive letters for environmental variables. Changing the drive letters may result in such programs not functioning correctly.

Zune doesnt connect

Brief Description of Problem (Including Error Codes (If any)):

Downloading music (as i do, LOTS) and i went to put a newly downloaded album on my zune.... so i started up the software.. and WHAM this popped up.... and no matter what it wont go away! (only tried the basic things, unplugging and restarting zune and software, ending every zune process open. Still no luck. And no matter what i'm sorry but i'm not resetting my zune back. =]

Headphone Jack Fix

FIX:

1) open up the zune (only removing the backplate)
2) turn it on and play a song (be careful not to touch any of the electronics)
3) press down on points on the headphone jack and listen to the music
4) when pressing down on a certain point does this help the problem?
5) try and figure out where that point is on the backplate (for me it was the bottom half of the headphone jack: so on the backplate that would be between the horizontal plastic mound and the smaller vertical mound)
6) append something that would press down on the jack to the backplate(I cut of the end of a cigarette filter and used a gluestick to keep it in place so I could close it up)
7) close it up


Zune has been working great for a couple of hours now.

PS: only do this if you're sure it's the audiojack and using the warranty isn't an option.

Zune Not Syncing

When syncing with the data cable, the software recognizes the Zune but it constantly tries syncing but disconnects, then reconnects and disconnects. It will sync a bit of info but them seemingly loses connection and tries restarting.

Try plugging it into a different USB slot. If your PC has USB ports at the back, try those as well.

anyways i was laying down going off to dreamland when i noticed my lil sister was tinkering with it i grabbed it from her then i set it down when i went to use it everything was gone all my games movies music ect. ect. gone so then i was upset but no big deal i then try to get all my stuff back by connecting it and it would not connect all i could hear is that sound going over and over again like when u connect a new object it got annoying very fast

so then it jus would not work i uninstalled the software then reinstalled it no go can anyone help me cuz im about to throw this thing out please and thanks

I know many are frustrated with issues of version 4.0 not login in after an update, here is the process I used over the weekend to resolve this matter.

First my credentials. a\

I am a software engineer (yes I actually went to a 4 year university for this degree) I currently develop .NET and ASP applications as well as some Cocoa applications.

I have used portable devices since the first BW Palm III, I have had it all from and tested and owned almost all there is to own in regards to portable devices... from Symbian, OSX, Palm, WM, even Lynux portable..

Now, why I post all these credentials and waste your time on them? Because even with all of the above it took me exactly 2 days to figure out how to resolve the problem. So please! don't feel frustrated or at least not so much if you can not get this resolved.

Also, don't blame so much the Tech Support at MS, they do their best with what is available to them. I know we all feel that most of the time they are useless but a mechanic is only as good as his tools and for good or bad when it comes to Microsoft, the tool is so incredibly complex and robust that it becomes a mix of a science and art to get some things resolved.

Now to my system:
Zune 80GB
Zune 4GB
Zune 4GB
Windows 7 Ultimate

Problem:
After updating to v4.0 I couldn't log in anymore, my collection was available but couldn't log in. I could log in a browser but not through the Zune software.


What I tried:
Updating the system to the latest .NET release.
Run a registry scan to see if there were corrupt registry entries after the latest update.
Upgrade my AVG to the latest 9.0 version.
Turn off my firewalls including the one on the router.
Turn them back on updating the access for Zune and all related executables and connections.
Try Zune software on a test machine (it ran fine on v3.1) 4.0 presented the same problems.
Unistaled Zune v.4.0 and reloaded v.3.1 which didnt work since before installing the installer downloaded the latest 4.0 and forced 4.0 instead of 3.1

What worked:
After wasting so many hours on all of the above, I tried by the simplest route. I logged in to my Live ID and checked that my settings were up to date, that my CC info was correct and accepted... all looked good but for some reason there was no relationship with my CC info and the XBOX account. Mind you I don't even own an XBOX so I never looked at it.

What I did is I updated the XBOX account by adding the CC for Zune to this account. Then opened my profile to see that my data is correct.

Logged out and like a miracle... Zune 4.0 back to live 100% no hickups or hang ups whatsoever.

So it seems it is not an error or problem with the software, it is a problem with the live ID and for some reason it likes to have an XBOX account.

I would recommend to just log in to your live ID using IE8 (just to be sure) and clicking around here and there, it seems that clicking the accounts refreshes the ID server or database entry to allow Zune to check it and see that all is ok.

Havent had any other issues with Zune since I did that. I hope you get the same luck. It is extremely frustrating not being able to download music but dont give up on the Zune... great things are in the future for those of us that have been holding the line.

Believe me.. I have inside info from a high level person at MS ;-)
