Please stop making threads regarding frozen Zune 30s.
We are well aware of this issue, but as of yet there are no official fixes or even safe dirty fixes to solve this problem.
We will update you as data rolls in.
It appears that it is related to the hardware clock in the Zune 30. People are reporting that by disabling the Windows Time Service on their PC, resetting the date on their PC (to something like 12/04/2008) , and stopping all Zune-related Windows services (and hard-resetting the Zune device [which involves opening it up]) they are able to get it all working again. -Via WillysJeepMan @ ZuneScene
However, this method will NOT be endorsed by ZuneBoards as it voids your warranty and can leave your Zune permently disabled.

Update:
Most people seems to agree that this was most likely caused by the leap year.

Unfortunately the same thing happened to me from last night in to this morning. I went to bed listening to music and charging it. When I woke up the battery was hot enough to burn a hole in someone's arm and it was stuck at the loading screen. I tried the "dirty fix" with letting the battery die then recharing it in a wall socket and it didn't work. This sucks because I just got a bunch of new music.
So I was listening to a couple podcasts last night before I went to bed, and I'm done so I turn off my Zune by pressing and holding the play button (as opposed to the back+down shutdown). I wake up today and try to turn on my Zune, and it shows the loading screen. "OK, thats odd, but whatever" I think to myself. I wait, and it is still loading (though the bar is shown as full). Three minutes later, it still loads. By now I realize its not functioning properly, so I try to force shut it down with the back+down buttons. That doesn't work either, so I do what I do in cases where it freezes: wait for the battery to die. I did that and recharged it, but it still does the same thing. I don't know why; I haven't done anything differently. If anybody knows how to solve this problem, please respond.
Original 30GB Zune, about one month old, new (as opposed to refurbished/used).
But things will return to normal shortly and we'll be back on top
You people just don't get it, do you? That comment is actually WORSE than the iFanBoys. Why do I feel comfortable saying this? Because most would call me a Microsoft fanboy. I'm pure Windows for normal operation, pure Windows for development, primary console is a 360, and I'd much prefer a Windows Mobile phone over any of the Symbian-based phones. But I have a video iPod, and it is the single best mobile music player out there. iTunes is a different story... I hate it with a burning passion. But the iPod is sleek, has an intuitive hardware interface, and the software isn't that bad. Granted, its' library setup rather blows, but I never said it was perfect. I didn't want an iPod... I bought a Zune first. Froze on me as soon as I plugged it in to my computer. Yeah, that sounds like a Microsoft move.
In general, I would STRONGLY prefer a Microsoft product over the Apple equivalent.. but Microsoft just failed miserably with the Zune. Kinda like Vista.
AFter reading the first 5 pages I see I dont need to tell you guys about my issue. Especially after reading several articles. Im just wondering if it will be fixed and when will it be fixed. I know you guys are probably insanely busy but I really need to know. I have had my Zune for a year and some odd months and it went out roughly 2-3am Boston, MA time.
same thing happened to me today...I don't think we'd have to buy a new one if they're ALL doing it at the same time....At least I hope not anyway. I just want it to work!! I've had mine since Mid-07 and have never had even one problem with it...
I'm pretty sure the word has gotten out to everyone but just in case here's the supposed answer to the issue. I can't buy a new zune either and mine was completely filled up with music so I'm praying to God that it works lol!!!!
The company issued a statement pinpointing “a bug in the internal clock driver related to the way the device handles a leap year.”
Microsoft also said that “the issue should be resolved over the next 24 hours as the time change moves to Jan. 1, 2009.”
The internal clocks on what is known as the Zune 30 should reset at noon GMT on Thursday, the company said. After that, Zune 30 users should follow these three steps:
Let the battery die.
Recharge it.
Turn the device on.
Zune Pass subscribers may need to sync their devices with their PCs to “refresh the rights to the subscription content you have downloaded to your device,” according to Microsoft’s statement.
Users of the 30GB model began reporting problems on a Microsoft message board early Wednesday. Customers similarly are saying that their digital music players get stuck on the Zune logo screen as it appears to load, and efforts to unjam the device are mostly fruitless.
@timeshifter, I'll have to respectfully disagree. Let their desperate attempt to flaunt the iPod come back to haunt them. Also from Zune.net:
Deat iDiots,
I'm sure you're having a field day with this one. Enjoy mocking an isolated incident trying to 'prove' the Ipod is a better device than the Zune. I'm not saying the Zune is better or worse, just that I am amused at how conceited & stuck up nearly all of the Ipod userbase is. Enjoy following the crowd and continue entertaining me with your claims of "LOL ZUNE IS A FAILURE JUST LIKE THE XBOX AND VISTA". I will sit here and laugh at your ignorance. - A faithful Zune, Vista & Xbox 360 user.

Um.. My zune also died and I can't buy a new one either, but there is now a supposed solution that I'm praying to God works. I'm pretty sure the word is out by now but just in case here's the answer I found!

ok so i figured my zune was stuck when i was trying to sleep at 4.20am EST... took a 1 hour nap... had to go to airport... came back googled... and realized my way back to my helping old forum lol...
to my discovery everyones' died. i have 2 30gb zunes, 1 is batt drained since who knows... and the other one was on the dock... so now i have it sitting on the side since MS' instruction says to drain and recharge on the new day? meaning january 1st 2009 12.01am PST? i take it... well if something doesn't go as plan, i did buy 1 extended warranty... so i guess if it doesn't work... i'll get 1 of them exchanged? then the other one, i'll use as a wall decoration, buy nice framing box for it an all... since it was once legend... lol i'm part of history.
Hehehe, I didn't even know the Zune 30 was having these problems. So I get home from work and as I'm reading some online news an article titled the "Zune Meltdown" catches my eye. So I read it and I'm like that sucks, but mine must be alright because it had never given me any major problems.
So I decide to turn it on to see what happens, and WTF! It froze too. Now I wished I hadn't sold off all my other MP3 players including my only iPod. I need my music! I've never been too happy with the way the Zune works, but its nice features and functions make up for that. But now this, man.
I hope it does start working again tomorrow like Microsoft says. I barely got my Zune last year and it was quite expensive for a college student like me. I sold off all my MP3 players with less memory capacity thinking that my new awesome Zune would be all that I needed from now on.
Hehe, I called one of my friends who also owns a Zune 30 and asked her if she had used it today. She said no, so I told her to turn it on and that with my mind I would make it stop working. So she turns it on and she's like WTF how did you know it wasn't going to work. So I'm like, magic! Well, at least close to it, the Internet.
