i have read many of the threads of how to help restore the Zune hardware and i look at the directions on the zune when i get there. i plug in my zune. step 2, word for word "On your PC, open the Zune software and restore the Zune device firmware." When the software recognizes it, it says that it needs a recovery update. Whenever i say install, the zune immediately disconnects. I even uninstalled the zune software and reinstalled it. instead it just says the zune did not update. is there anyway to restore it without the zune software? that would make my life so much easier and then i can start from scratch. i want to use my zune, but i guess it doesn't like me anymore. if this doesn't work, i am seriously considering going towards ipod, which is not a good thing. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

In order to fix your problem there is a couple things you can do:
1. If you have recently purchased the zune, pack up the zune really nice in its original box and exchange it at the store! 2. Call Zune, if you still have the recipt of when you bought your zune, zune has a warrenty on it for one year and if you bout your zune less than a year ago, the zune company can fix the problem: heres the zune phone number: Assistance by phone seven days a week: 1-877-GET-ZUNE (438-9863) TTY (hearing impaired) 1-800-801-1189 Hours of operation (daily): 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. EST 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. PST 3. Heres the resetting process: Reset: (1. Turn the Zune's "Hold" switch to the "Off" position. This switch is located at the top of the device and is in the "Off" position when no portion of the switch is red. 2. Push and hold the "Back" button while simultaneously pressing the "Up" position on the control pad. Keep both buttons depressed until the screen goes blank. 3. Look for the "Zune" logo to appear on the screen. This indicates that the Zune is resetting itself. 4. Wait for the device to fully reset itself before attempting to operate it.) 4. Heres the reformat process: Under rare circumstances you may need to reformat your player. (Typically you wouldn't do this unless directed to by Zune technical support.) First, press and hold the back (left) button and at the same time press and hold the "up" button on the control pad. The player will start to reset; as soon as it does, hold down the back button, center button, and right button at the same time. Your player will then inform you that it is deleting all media on device, and your Zune should revert to the "way it was" when you first pulled it out of the box - except that you will lose the pre-loaded content. There's no workaround for that one... yet! |

thanks for your responses, but i got my zune a while ago and the warranty is over. somehow when i restored it again and again and again by pressing the back button, left, and center on the pad while the zune is restarting, just keep doing it. it still says it disconnected, but it was actually updating and trying to work. if it doesn't finish the first time, keep trying to install it, there is like zune restart menus that come up during the recovery mode update and on the third one, the bar on the bottom wouldn't make it all of the way. but don't give up, keep installing it. it took me about 15-20 installs to eventually get the whole bar, but now my zune works fine. just so everyone else that has this problem knows, restore the system a couple of times and keep installing the software even if it doesn't go all of the way, because it will go all of the way eventually.
