Hi there,
I'm wondering if it was possible for me to get my Zune 30 to connect DIRECTLY to my laptop using an ad-hoc wireless connection? I don't have a wireless router so I can't really go through a network. I've tried using the Wireless Sync from the Zune Software, but it appears to not detect any networks. Any help would be great. Cheers ![]() |

If zunes can do ad-hoc, maybe someone can make a hack to create a pseudo network? That or microsoft should put this in the next firmware?

I haven't seen an instructions set that doesn't include router/modem in it. It's really for the fun of it though. The USB 2.0 cable is faster than my 54mbps wireless connection, and it charges the player in the process as well.

Zune uses Ad-Hoc Wireless G when playing multiplayer games.

I'm testing this right now...
Well, I tried everything I could think of, but I could not get my Zune to connect to my temporary ad-hoc Network. I was going to connect using ad-hoc when I got to college since I won't have my wireless router anymore, but I guss we're out of luck unless Mirosoft adds it to a later firmware update. Until then, the only other solutions are to go buy a wireless router, or just connect it using the cable. As you said, the cable is faster anyway, so for now, I'm just not going to worry about it. ![]() |

By Ad-Hoc, i mean connecting zune to zune. eg. like the way Nintindo DS and PSP play multiplayer. The same goes for the zune. Zune can play online games with other zunes using ad-hoc wireless G connection.

I actually went back and was replying to the first post. Dannyboi was asking about connecting the Zune wirelessly to a laptop for syncing instead of having to connect through a router. As for Zune to Zune connections, I have heard that you can do that for some games, but I haven't gotten a chance to test it out.

It is not possible to perform a wireless sync without a wireless router at this time. It is how MS programmed it to require a router, likely because it has better "synergy" with The Home Media Center thing they are doing with the Windows Home Server, XBox, etc

So they have no plans to allow for ad-hoc connection to a computer? I think Microsoft is taking the wrong direction with decisions like this. If they're going to add features like this, they should make them as compatible as possible. It's not like if they enable the using of ad-hoc networks that it's going to make it to where people CAN'T use a router.

If you can get your computer to act as a router, shouldn't it work? I mean, couldn't you have the laptop act as a router that routes to itself?
For the record, I have no idea if it will, and I am just trying to be helpful by giving ideas. |

This idea popped into my head as well, but that's really what an ad-hoc network is... a computer that is acting as a wireless router. There is no way that I know of to make the computer act as if it were an actual router. When you set up an ad-hoc network, the signal that it emits tells everything that it's an ad-hoc network, not a hardware router.
