Backing up song/album formatting + artwork

I just bought a Zune and spent all weekend organizing my music. However, I can't sync it up because I've been having trouble with my USB. I want to reformat my hard drive, but I don't want to lose all of the organization and cover art that is saved.

My music is all saved on an external drive and I organized it from that drive. If I reformat, will I lose my Zune information or is it saved onto my external drive with my music?
