Alright so this is a new Zune 30GB I received from microsoft after I previously had a refurbished Zune that was giving me poor batter life and hard drive issues. I immediately charged the battery to full(I don't think at 12hours though). I synced all of my music on my zune player and I also took the steps to tweak the settings so I use less battery life. I turned off the wireless, changed the backlight timer to 5 seconds, no equalizer, and the brightness to low. I also started powering down my Zune completely by holding the "back" button thats on the far left and the "down" button on the pad to do a completely shutdown. So I did all the necessary steps to save battery life. Turns out that I would charge up my zune to full overnight, and then wake up in the morning, do a completely shutdown and then go to school. When I power the Zune up, I notice that the battery says I have "half" of a battery life? That's impossible since I turned it off immediately after a full charge. My Zune's batttery life is rather poor and drains itself when not in use and on a full shutdown. Anyone have any ideas?

Um... i believe this is normal for new zunes. You'll need to recharge and discharge the battery for about 10 times and it'll be normal.
It's just the way Li-ion battery work.

Yes I have the current Zune software up to date and the firmware up to date as well.
What do you mean recharge and discharge? Are you saying that I have to let it drain completely about 10 times and recharge it to have it actually last longer? As a consumer, that would really strike me as an odd detail, but maybe your right. I'll charge it overnight, do a reset, and see what happens. |

Um... Li-ion battery typically needs to be used a couple times to reach its full capacity.
eg. Say you have 1000 miliamprehour li-ion battery The first time you charge it, it might only hold 500miliamprehour of electricity By the 10th time, It'll probably hold its rated capacity of about 1000miliamprehour. So after a couple days/weeks of use, you'll see that you zune's battery life will gain up to 100%. After that, your zune's battery life will go down hill. Almost all electronics that uses li-ion rechargable battery will be like this. This includes cellphones, Ipods, bluetooth earphone .. etc

Your zune doesn't not drain itself when you do a complete shutdown.
Here's why: When you charge the li-ion battery, it can only hold certain amount of electricity. The battery meter check the voltage of the battery to guage and estimate how much electricity the li-ion battery is capable of releasing. The first few times you recharge the li-ion battery, the battery doesn't hold a lot of charge. When you're charging, the li-ion battery might have seem to be full, but it really isn't. After 1-5 minute when you unplug it from the charger, the voltage will drop to a stable level which in your case, half discharged. I won't go into technical details as that might confuse you. Here's an analogy if you're still confused. The li-ion is like a water bucket. You can refill it and you can drain it. When you bucket is new, it has some holes from the middle part to the top. When you first refill the water in, you can fill the water to the top, but the water level will go down and water will drain out through the holes until the water level gets below the holes. When the owner refils the bucket 10 times, he'll have patched out all the holes. Now he can refil the water to the top without it leaking. As time goes by again, the bucket wears down, and starts leaking little by little until all of a sudden, the water bucket have a giant crack down in the middle and it becomes useless.

Thank you that helps me...the original zune i had (zune 80) was great not one issue with it what so ever til one day while in mid sync it stopped on its own. so i picked it up hit play everything was fine til i hit the play/pause and it didnt stop. so I did a soft reboot but hit the zune screen no loading bar and right to screen 5 (which i found out is the same as the ring of death on 360)
So...I got my refurbished zune (minor scuffs on the squircle) had half a charge on it out of the box...install software, left plugged in to charge. take it to work the next day (not paying attention to the battery) messed around with it at lunch, bring it home hook it back up the to comp and start taking most of the pre loaded stuff off, put some of my music on.... once again left hooked up to charge, next day i plug it into my car and realized that the battery icon wasn't green anymore (this is 2 min later) listened to it on my 20min "commute" shut it off and hit the hold button, listen to it at work for maybe 10 min once again shut it off, hold button, maybe 5hrs later on my way home go to turn it on...NOTHING IT WAS DEAD ![]() charged again the next day listened on my way to work, now it wasnt touched for 10hrs, hook it back up to the car DEAD plug it back in to the comp when it had enough of a charge did a soft reboot, charge for 10hrs...unplug it today, but said low batt right after charging but immediatly went to green bar then right to just under full ![]() grrr so i hope the more times i charge it as you say the better it will get Last edited by Rokuo : 06-07-2008 at 05:55 PM. |

1) If its plugged in the charger, the battery meter is always green 2) As soon as i disconnect it from the charger, withint 15 seconds, the battery meter will become a little bit below normal. It's normal I suggest you draining your zune battery completely. When the zune turn itself off, turn it back on again until the zune no longer respond. Charge it to full again and your zune's battery meter should be collaborated.

My zune pretty much works on demand mostly because it's been tethered most of the time to my PC. Still might need some "hole patching" to do, but i have had it for about 4 days now.
