Same problem here, I chargerd it completly, and its stuck in the same screen as before. So yeah, my zune is useless. Way to start a new year Microsoft.
Yeah. Mine's completely useless now, too. I've done everything they said. Whenever it DOES actually get passed the loading screen, I get a black screen. $200 just sitting there not even working. And to make it even worse, I got a new 8gb and was listening to it on the way to work, but when I get here, all of a sudden nothing can be played. "The item is either missing or can't be played." Funny, because it JUST DID WORK! Best $350 I ever spent...
Yeah, I know you're going to tell me to just synch it to my computer. Only problem with that is my computer's at home. So while I go from here to my other job then to home, I have no music, just another Zune that can't do a damned thing.
Here I am the next day. Zune still stuck, still frozen. Unreal. And all the press says that microsoft "fixed" the bug. Not only does microsoft suck, but our press sucks too.
Misery loves company, but I hate to see others with the same problem. But maybe that means they will still work on a solution for us.
I let my battery die according to MS official fix. I plugged it in yesterday around noon local time (CT) and it came back up. Today, it is frozen again. Now waiting to kill the battery again.
honestly, what was it i wrote that made you think i was this stupid? oh, and thanks for logging that infraction while I deal with this problem.
You'd be surprised on what some people require help with.
Also, no infraction, just a warning
Have you called the Zune support line yet?
If you've followed the steps, there's not much we can do. Maybe MS has some answers. Zune.net | Contact Support

Why not just let the battery die. Once you get the ! mark, then plug it in a pc set to the year 2010 to charge. while it charges, open the zune soft to get the date stuff synced. In the end, once charged, try again.
I tried to avoid technical talk with the intentions that it might just help you out.
Mine was stilol frozen after doing everything 4 times, but I found a fix!
I'm new to this forum but just wanted to send out something that I did to my 30G Zune (Brown one) that fixed the freeze where NOTHING else did!
I tried the "completely drain the battery till you get the battery "!" indicator, then charge" routine 4 times with NO success and the same freeze screen after each recharge about 20-30 minutes into the charge cycle.
I figured it was never going to work and I started to see other poeple were still having problems as well . I didn't pay too much for mine used from a friend so I thought why not try the battery disconnect method others were purposing (figured MS wasn't going to do anything for me anyway). Well, I did this method a few times as well with no better results .
This evening I went for broke and tried the "Erase" button sequence when it was first turning on (took me a couple of tries) and I was able to get it to go into the erase sequence. I of course lost the music on it but I have it on my PC to reload and its better than the unit not working at all! It came up and seems to work just fine now and will shut down and then turn back on again when I turn it back on and comes up just fine.. Tried it several times and it remains working.
You can find directions on how to do an "Erase" from the link I have listed below, if you're so inclined to try this because your having not luck with antything else. Hey, mine works now and thats better that what it wass doing a couple of hours ago. My PC would never see it before even thogh I set the date well past the problem date.
I think there may be more to this that what MS is letting on for a small group of older 30G Zunes (at least there was for mine). Try this at your own risk, I'm not telling you that you should, just letting other know it worked for me where nothing else did.
I also did something that you should NOT do. I take NO responsibility for any damge or any other issues caused to your unit if you do this. I used a small screw driver to "short out" the batrtery on the two exposed contacts near the edge of the battery connector vs removing the battery each time or waiting for it to discharge "again".
I already went through all the other stuff several times and was resigned to not carrying anymore if I broke it doing this or not, I just wanted to try something and it worked out for me.
Good Luck, you'll need it!!
You can email me if you have any questions on what I did to get mine to work again if you want. If you try this then you take on the risk, I'm not telling you to do it, just telling you it worked in my case.
Here is exactly what I am doing. Wait for the charge to disappear completely.
Plug the Zune into a charger from a wall socket. Waiting and watching the zune until it tries to start up (or pressing play after a while to make this occur.) Then I try the key sequences (format or erase or both). The Zune makes a noise, goes to a blank screen, begins to reboot again and sticks in the same place it has stuck for everyone else. It does not respond to the buttons during this second startup
Again, it sticks at this place no matter what i do. Hours and hours of time have been wasted trying to make this thing work. The next time some Apple person tells me how the Zune is a piece of crap, I will agree. The next time I see some post from someone saying how great their Zune is, I will consider this similar to George Bush telling us how great the Iraq War is going, or how solid the economy is.
Did I mention I was pissed? Pissed at money down the drain, pissed at hours wasted, and pissed at the people who tell my how simple it is to fix this Zune and give me infractions for not posting the right way. During my time of trouble this board gives me an "infraction" (that apparently isn't an infraction, just a warning. Why then does it say"infraction"?)
I think mine tries to erase, tries to format, then encounters something in the software that it has to reboot for. However, there is something different on the second reboot because it won't respond to any buttons sequences then.
Basically, a few of us had Zunes that were killed by that Zune software glitch. Is at least THAT fair to say?

Joemuseum, I understand your pissed, I would be too. But why not try every suggestion given to you, instead of venting (I have posted this solution over 4 times already).
Hope it helps you out. If not, try calling Microsoft, even though your zune is out of warranty, they will try to troubleshoot the issue over the phone for free. Moreover, they might realize that this is partly their fault and make a one time exception for a warranty covered replacement.
After all, Microsoft does have their moments. Point of reference goes to Valentines day where Microsoft couldn't honor its promised ship dates for zune that were meant to be Valentines gifts. What did they do? Well, everyone who got their Zunes after 2/14 got theirs free.
okay so after three days trying to drain battery and restart nothing worked. zune still stuck on loading screen oh and whats the date...JAN 3 at 9:00am!!!!!
i took apart the zune yesterday....disconnected battery disconnected hard drive. like i said....nothing worked! so i decided to change the date on my computer and try again....who's lame idea was that. cause it didn't work. all these solutions were just a waste of time and i was going to buy a new 120GB zune today.....until i found a fix.
the only thing that seemed to work was to try and erase content and firmware.
most people say to press back, right on d-pad, and play. this is totally not right. i looked up the zune circuit board info and for a zune30gb the erase combo is BACK, CENTER "OK" Button, and RIGHT ON D-PAD
do this combo when the zune screen first pops up. don't try and do it when the loading has already started....this is where most people go wrong. it takes good timing. but it worked for me. i hope it works for you! you will lose all your data on the zune and have to sync with comp. updates and everything but at least your not forced to buy a lame ipod haha

I tried to reset my device (back+center+right) while it was starting, but then it froze while it was "Clearing contents. Please wait." Tried it again and it does the same thing. I'm afraid I'm giving my Stu permanent brain damage (if he survives)
What do I do???
And why can't MS acknowledge that the problem is still around for a bunch of us? I'd like to hear what they have to say! Maybe we should just wait until 2012 and then everything will be OK.

do you press all those buttons at the same time or just do them in a sequence?
