VERSION OF ZUNE
======================
I have Two Zune 80gb
1 Zune 30gb
I'm only trying to get one 80gb one to work but none work.

VERSION OF ZUNE SOFTWARE/FIRMWARE
=====================================
Zune Software 3.1.
Long story short, 3.0 didn't work. So I reinstalled v2.5. It worked again. Then 3.1 came out so I downloaded that thinking it would be fixed. It wasn't. Reinstalled 2.5.... wouldn't reinstall.

OPERATING SYSTEM
======================
Vista

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION
=======================
I plug in my Zune to my USB. It searches for drivers. It can't find the drivers and therefore can't install them.

On my Zune, I go to Settings -> About -> Zune and tells me it is version 2.5. Bootloader 1613 too for whatever reason. Obviously it should say 3.1 but since it won't sync, can't do much about it.

THINGS ATTEMPTED SO FAR
===========================
Oh god.

Reinstalled dozens of times, unzooned, I've used all 3 Zune cords I own with other Zunes, gone through Device Manager and tried reinstalling the drivers, gone through the MS support flow chart twice.

Today I was hoping for the cure. I downloaded the 3.1 drivers from Vettexl's sticky thread above. I'm thinking I installed them wrong though. I open the file, click "Yes to All" and reconnect Zune. Still nothing. Is that what I should be doing? I also tried the other set of drivers just to see what would happen. Same thing.

HAVE YOU SEARCHED ONLINE/ZUNEBOARDS TO FIND A SOLUTION?
================================================== ========
Oh my god.... I even searched on Excite.com for an answer. Maybe webcrawler.com will find me that holy grail of an answer.

Nope.

HAVE YOU RECEIVED ANY ERROR MESSAGES?
========================================
I plug in my Zune. It searches, then says:

Windows needs to install driver software.

I click: Locate and install the software. Simple enough.

And so, Windows installs the device driver. This is where my hopes get really high. "MAYBE THIS TIME IT'LL WORK!" And then it says:

Windows encountered a problem installing the device software for your device.
Windows found the device software for your device, but encountered an error while attempting to install it.

I click "close." And then cry.

-------------------------------------------------
I've been using my Zune for almost 2 years without a problem. Then 3.0 came out and screwed everything up. It won't sync so I can't add anymore music. I can live with that, I have a whole bunch of songs to choose from. What I can't live without is the copyright error I get on my device.

I'm desperate. I listen to this thing all day and I'm lost without it.

Side note: When I plug it into my Xbox 360, it says "connected" and works just as it should.

[SOLVED] Kind of.

Went to Microsoft Update Catalog, searched "Zune" and found version 2.5. Downloaded it (it takes a second for the download to start so don't close the smaller pop-up window) and opened the file

"X86-all-zunesetuppkg-x86_87e679d22c19d1cfb5b2437a9c49d774287092bb"

Then I installed the 2.5 drivers back onto my Zune, which I could do the whole time, and BADDAH BING! That glorious "Connected" thing came onto my Zune.

To install those drivers, I did this:

Device Manager -> Zune -> Driver tab -> Update Driver -> Browse my Computer for Driver Software -> Let Me Pick a List of Devices.... -> Zune Version: 2.5.400.0

So you don't get the games or the other cool things in version 3.0. BUT AT LEAST YOU GET A ZUNE THAT WORKS!

Oh, and to download version 2.5.... you HAVE TO USE Internet Explorer. Found that kinda funny. Let me know if anyone has some success with this so I can then stroke my ego.

To install the 3.0 software and have it update your Zune's firmware try the following. Go into Device Manager and disable your USB2/enhanced controller (you might have more than one so you would need to disable those as well). Once those are disabled start the software and plug in your zune. It should say connected and start updating everthing. After your firmware is updated you can disconnect it. Try enabling the USB2 controller's and plug in your zune. If there are no problems it should work without problem. If it starts to give you the same problems try plugging it into a different USB port (preferrably on the back of the computer).

Hope it works for you.
