I finally got it working! Here's what I did:
1. Reboot the Zune with left button + Up on the middle button
2. While it reboots push and hold both left and right button. This should format the Zune
3. Power down the Zune with left button + Down on the middle button
4. Plug the Zune in your computer. When the Zune software starts and prompts for a firmware upgrade click Install
5. After installing the firmware synchronise the Zune with your content.
Nothing has worked on this thread that I have tried. I had around 4GB of data on my Zune before it malfunctioned and I have erased it several times. Is it worth contacting Microsoft? Have they been any help in solving the issue?
My problem started with Error message on the Zune device: "To recover from an error, Zune must clear all content". The message repeated each time I clicked OK. I followed the steps available on the microsoft support site... and that let to my next problem of error code C00D124F. My Software and device updates both gave me errors. I followed all possible suggestion to no luck. I then called the 1877GetZune and re-stated my problem. After a 2 hr call when none of the resolutions they provided corrected the error. I was finally asked to send the zune in for repair.
So probably there is no resolution yet for this error. I hope they find some solution.
It is important to notice that the way I got it working was that the Zune was completly off before i connected it to the PC. Otherwise it will not work!
To reiitererate here's the procedure:
1. Reboot the Zune with left button + Up on the middle button
2. While it reboots push and hold both left and right button. This should format the Zune 3. Power down the Zune with left button + Down on the middle button
4. Plug the Zune in your computer. When the Zune software starts and prompts for a firmware upgrade click Install
5. After installing the firmware synchronise the Zune with your content.
I have been having the same problem recently. I looked on the Zune website and I found the answer but under a different category. I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop that obviously runs with Windows. The storage device has to do with the information on your main disk drive. I went to Start-Programs-Acessories-System Tools-Disk Cleanup. It checks objects for you but you can take anything away you feel is unimportant. Be careful not to delete any Zune software or any big name programs. Then click OK and let it delte some space. After dooing this the error went away. It is also good to defragment the disk after cleaning it. Sorry if it does not work for you but it completley worked for me
Can't sync because there isn't enough space on your zune. Delete some items and then try again. Error code: C00D124F
I've got the same issue and I've done all the "hard reset" and soft reset and everything google and its masses told me, sad to say that MS themselves have done jack all to help its customers. Im an 80G. only had the dam thing 1 and a bit months.
Wishing i'd bought a iTouch...
I don't know if someone posted this, but what ever. I just had your same problem, I tried draining the battery, reinstall everything, etc, and nothing came from that. Hell I was even regretting buying my zune since the day I got vista my respect for Microsoft products was almost non-existent. But alas I did not want an I-pod and went for the Zune 80 which was perfectly fine before the 2.5 firmware update.
First what I did was make the zune software forget about the device. Then i tried updating the software it would give me the "unknown error" message. I then restarted my computer and tried again this time the error became error C001249 at that point I did the following on this site.
I did all 4 steps, tried updating my zune I saw it was finally loading something (you know that loading bar that comes up when you turn on your zune when it was working fine) then it went to steps 3(please wait) and 4 (clearing contents) and sent me back to step 1. Finally i did one last update and it went through. Now I have an un-BRICKED zune.
I was sure it was not a hardware issue so I did not want to have to send my zune for repair. then I did what asorsdal posted:
It did not work in my original computer a couple of times so I tried in a different one and then it worked (the second time). So if you have this issue I recommend you to try the process several times as it should work (again, I was sure it was not a HW issue).
this I did it in another computer (not the one I was usually synching the Zune with)
1. Reboot the Zune with left button + Up on the middle button
2. While it reboots push and hold both left and right button. This should format the Zune
3. Power down the Zune with left button + Down on the middle button. this will let the zune power off
4. Start the zune SW
5. Plug the Zune in your computer. Click the right button to start the zune.
6. When the Zune software starts and prompts for a firmware upgrade click Install
For this step I used my regular computer:
7. After installing the firmware synchronise the Zune with your content.
Hope it helps.

Hey, I have just spent 2 days trying to figure this out...
The problem actually started when I was abroad and I started to charge my zune 30gb and I saw the no. 5 message:
Contact Support
I figured I might as well sort this out in the States since overseas there wasn't a constant internet connection stream.
So, I come here all jet lagged and I go online and try all the things the zune help website suggests...
I am able to restore the zune but when it comes to install the firmware I get to separate messages
the one on my pc gives the C00D124F message
and the one on the laptop gives the C00D1195 message - which tells me I need to delete files from my hard disk so it can update to 2.5
I tried deleting useless files but the message still comes up and this is really frustrating me....
I also tried to do the press back and up and then the left and right (does this refer to the back and play buttons or the left and ride side of the big round button??) either way nothing worked.
I don't think I have any warranty or if I did it expired about a year ago...
So, if I send it in..does anyone know how much it would cost to fix it?
Or if there is anyone out there who could help us with this problem...
if the restore (or the deletion of the data partition and start-up partition) did not resolved the issue, and you still receive the same error message 'no enough space on zune device,' it is quite odd because basically, you've erased all the contents of the zune device. so if that's the case, the device would need to be set up for repair. call 1877getzune if you still have the warranty for the device, if not, have it checked by third party repair center. ☺

I'm having the same problem. Unpacked it from the box, turned it on, and it immediately got stuck in the "To recover from an error, Zune must clear all content" loop. I followed Microsoft's instructions to format the player, which seemed to work. Then I hooked up the USB cable, and got the C00D124F message about not updating my firmware. I tried formatting again, and now it's stuck in a formatting loop - every time I turn it on, it goes through steps 3-5, ending with "Please contact support". I'm getting ready to call Support as soon as they open.
Is it possible that this indicates a broken harddrive? I've had my 30gb for about 2 years now I think, and this problem just started. When I called zune support they told me that the harddrive needed to be replaced and to send it in and they would fix it for $100. I said F that and ended up just getting a new 16gb zune. Now I have this 30gb brick just sitting around but I was thinking of replacing the harddrive with an 80gb one off ebay if it will fix the problem. $70 for an 80gb zune sounds nice especially since zune support was trying to charge me $100 just to replace the hd with another 30gb.
I've had the same problem with my 80gb zune with the error message saying it needs more space or something and I just fixed it. I reset my zune with the back arrow and up on the pad, and then did a hard reset by pressing all three buttons. I plugged it back in and it wanted to update again, so I tried and it got to like 47% and failed (said it didnt have space again). Did another hard reset(restore) as before and plugged it back in and tried the update again. This time it worked. I recommend that you keep trying this method if it your zune is doing this. If it doesn't work after like 5 times, then I would try something else.
