No, it wouldn't be great. Browsing the web with a D-pad and two buttons would suck. Texting with a D-Pad and two buttons would suck. It's an MP3 Player, not an iPhone. Why oh why do people keep making these topics.
I agree. It would suck and the wireless for zune isnt that strong so you would have to be in like the same room. Anyway, its comming out check out zune games at www.undeadwarez.com
I could just call the damn person on my Cell Phone in the time it would take you to start up the App, and type in 'Hello' with the D-Pad and On-screen keyboard. It's a ridiculous and stupid idea.

indeed it is

I can type just as fast on a zune as on a cellphone. On screen keyboard on the zune could be similar to the one on a cellphone. There won't be a problem entering 15 words per minute on the zune.

and there would be no problems speaking 100+ words a minute talking a call phone. i don't understand the appeal...

A cellphone as keys with 3 letters each that you can type fast on. The zune has a 4-way directional pad, that you'd have to move to each letter on the on-screen keyboard. Furthermore, cellphones can text ANYONE IN THE WORLD with a cellphone. A Zune can only connect to another Zune in an area with WiFi.
As the guy above me said, I dont understand the appeal either. I can't imagine anyone using this seriously beyond a proof of concept, and even then it's still a waste of time, unless you simply want to be able to say 'oh I can txt people on my Zune'
I was suppose to qutoe Spike! who said typing on a zune would suck. the person above him. I was only trying to say that typing on the zune can be as fast as typing on a cellphone if the developer had a efficient alphabet layout.
eg. and efficient layout would be
How it looks like
abc def ghi
jkl mno opr
stu vwx yz_
If one want to type words from the middle group of letters, one would press the center button for zune 30 and tap the center for 2nd gen zune. If you tap/press once, it select M. If you tap/press twice, it skips M and goes to N, if you press/tap 3 times it skips 2 letters and go to O.
If one want to type words from the top left group of letters. All he needs to do is swip yoru finger to the top left on the squicle or press the top left part of the Dpad on zune 30. Then press/tap the center key to select letters.
To type a second letter, all one would need to do is press/swip in another direction, then tap/press the center button.
It works similar to a cellphone keypad, but it has different letter layout and requires the D-pad/squicle for selecting groups of letters instead of assigning different keys to different groups of letter.
Most of this is really irrelevant because the Zune has no internet capability. You could make a messaging app for chatting with people in the same area as you (using the Zune to Zune networking), but there is no way to connect to the internet with the Zune.

the only way i see zune to zune messaging as useful is in a multiplayer game so you can chat with the people in the wi fi range if they happen to be in another room or something of that sort. Other than that, just talk to the person or text them
Ok, well i say NO on INTERNET BROWSER. It just wont work, i'm sorry.
But...YES on messaging. Great for in-class conversations, u could just say ur listining to music. And typing could work...
You could use cell phone typing style, as said before, but you would just divide up the squircle region into 6 regions. That way, it would be very similar to a cell phone. But the regions would have to be really small. Its possible. Hopefully someone tries it, it could work.
